Q: "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out."

Every hour or two iTunes for Mac displays a modal dialog box with the error "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out." This interrupts any activity like playing over AirPlay or controlling with the Remote App on iOS.

I can identify no networks problems. If I go to view the iTunes Store deliberately I have no problem. I have no pending downloads from the iTunes store. I am not trying to purchase anything from the iTunes Store. I have no reason to connect to the iTunes Store.

There are no unapplied updates for iTunes. There are no unapplied updates for Mac OS X. There are no unapplied updates for my router. There are no network connection problems to any site that I have found.

I cannot find any messages that allow me to debug this problem. The support page at If you can’t connect to the iTunes Store - Apple Support supplies no useful information.

What is this error message supposed to indicate to me? What problem am I actually experiencing?
