Q: Why won't my iMessage accept my username and password to activate

I reset the settings on my iPad as I had a problem with slow typing. This solved the problem. Now when I try and activate my iMessage and FaceTime I enter the correct Apple ID and password but I keep getting the message 'a verified email address is required to sign into FaceTime' I don't understand this as I have a verified email address. Please help

iPad mini Wi-Fi, iOS 9.2.1
