Split Screen/spilt desktop - Monitor & Mac Book

Hey, i'm trying to split my screen between my monitor and my Macbook pro so i can view a separate desktop screen on my monitor and then view another desktop screen on my Macbook pro. Essentially i want to be able to play movies while i work. So i have something to look at when i get bored or need some inspiration.

Does anyone know how to do this and can anyone help me with this one.

Thanks

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Hey there Sammi,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I understand correctly, you want to know how to set up one continuous desktop that spans across your MacBook Pro and your external monitor rather than have the same image appear on both displays. Try taking a look at the article below which outlines the available display option preferences and it will also walk you through the process of setting up extended desktop.
