Chapter markers not showing up

So for some reason my new 4th Gen Apple TV doesn't seem to recognize chapter markers on videos I've encoded in Handbrake. If I open the file in Quicktime the chapters show up fine. On my 3rd Gen and 2nd Gen Apple TV they show up as well. But for some reason the 4th Gen doesn't recognize them.

I have other files that do seem to work, but those were converted from MKVs using iFlicks. So I'm not sure if it's something weird with how Handbrake encodes the markers or what.

Apple TV, iOS 9.2.1

Make sure you have given the chapter track a language.

Yup. That was it. Now to just go through 12 episodes of the Simpsons and add it to all 23 episodes...

(this is going to be painful, isn't it?)

Curious that the old Apple TV didn't require this...

That's true, but clearly iTunes files have always been made this way, I guess there's a good case for doing what has been done with them.

Most metadata software will provide the option. Personally I use Subler. I open the mp4 file in subler then it pulls up the various audio tracks video tracks etc. change the language to English and the save it...

Thank you. I have used MetaX (Windows version) and up until ATV4G it worked perfectly. Now none of the chapters are recognized.

IT looks like metax released an update (2.44/2.45) to address the issue.

Thank you Protodd. I am reading through the release notes and except for an issue with ATV4G not being able to play a file with no chapters, there is no mention of why the chapters that are tagged via MetaX do not show up in tvOS.

I am unable to find a metadata editor like Subler which allows for the assigning of language to the Chapters track.

Not sure of a Windows alternative. Have you tried to reencode the existing file with MetaX? Thought being that if a fix was released this reprocessing may update the file?

I can do this in QuickTime 7, you may still be able to get this for windows.

For what it's worth, I just updated to the latest version of Handbrake and it still doesn't have an option to set the language for chapters. So it looks like it's still a 2-step process involving Subler.

Hopefully they address it in the 1.0 update.

I Don't beleive this functionality will ever be in handbrake. The chapter language will be found in the metadata file rather than the container tools...

True, but they allow you to add metadata for your language tracks as well as chapter titles, so you'd think it could just be a checkbox or something.

But the chapter "images" and markers would be in the meta data file on top of the mp4container. handbrake will put the movie into a container/language into a format (MP4) that can be read by the iTunes/ATV

Dan Hinsley will be updating MetaX for Windows to fix this issue. I have tested the fix and it works. This does not, however, return the Skip to the Next Chapter functionality without accessing the chapter list.
