It's ok I found a post that answers the question:I am trying to connect a Macbook Pro with Retina Display to a new Dell Ultrasharp 3014 monitor. I have tried to connect via HDMI and the DVI cable provided with the monitor but monitor says "no dvi-d cable".
Actually the only one that worked on mine so far was the DVI to thunderbolt.. and I ordered Mini DisplayPort toMini DisplayPort but it did not work...
I was hoping to get better resolution e.g. 2560x1600
But it is only 1920 x 1080 now
you do not tell us what MacBook you have

You posted in the MacBook Pro community and your question refers to the MacBook. There is a difference.

Thanks, Duane - BUT - the OP has not told us what (generic term he used) "MACBOOK" he has... I might well call my MacBook Pro a "macbook" in conversation = clarification was needed before acting, IMHO
I guess we can always get it moved around after input from OP - odds on it being " MacBook (13-inch, 2006-2010) " are not favorable
It could be that you have "Low Resolution" enabled for your displays

I have a Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch mid 2014 OS 10.11.3
and I now have a Dell 30 inch U3014 Monitor.( I mostly work in PS on wildlife photos),
I attached it with a DVI to mini DisplayPort cable to the Thunderbolt.
I followed the Apple support instruction you gave and the maximum resolution selection is
automatically optimized for 1920 x 1080" as opposed to the Dell's 2560 x 1800. I read an Amazon review
that a mini DisplayPort to mini Displayport works so I will try that again.

Out of my bailiwick now - earlier search revealed this > Use 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with your Mac - Apple Support = I have no idea whether this will help, you Mac is fairly new
