Preview > Help instructions for creating a signature with your inbuilt camera:

  1. Create a signature using your computer’s built-in camera: Click Camera. Hold your signature (on white paper) facing the camera so that your signature is level with the blue line in the window. When your signature appears in the window, click Done. If you don’t like the results, click Clear, then try again.

If your camera is working (check in Photo Booth or other camera enabled apps), you are probably not holding your your white paper signature still in front of the camera for a long enough time to make your signature "appear" in the window. When you put the paper up, you can see your signature on the paper. However, as you move it close and hold it still and level with the blue line for several seconds, it will "appear" as another, new, clear, and magnified view of your signature. You can then move the paper and click the "Done" button to capture the image of the signature.

Hi Jim when I open up Preview and I click tools then I click annetote. Instead of displaying 2 options which are 1(create signature) and 2{manage signature) I only get the 1 option which is (manage signatures) I think this is where my problems start.

I go through the procedure manage signature and when blue view pane with blue line appears I can get no picture capture after holding up white paper with signature on it

I don't even get adjacent view opening with accept on it.

Even if I open up Preview and the Preferences then on the opened preferences I can only see at the top small icons 1,General 2,Images 3,Pdf and no Icon for signature.

I have followed different tutorials and I don't seem to have this create signature option and even if i go through the procedure after opening up document through preview there is no pencil icon on toolbar to create signature which I see on other tutorials.

This icon and facility to create signature seem to be missing from my preview set up in order to complete any capture.

Trevor.

Thanks! Now I understand.

What you are seeing is normal. You do not get "Create" options if you have not yet saved signatures. Start again as shown in the images below:

(1) Click "Manage Signatures..."

User uploaded file

(2) AFTER you click "Manage Signatures...", signature recording options appear in a new window like the following:

User uploaded file

(3) When using the camera tab (as in my image) to make your signature:

• Use a clean paper that covers the entire camera field of view.

• Use a dark colored, high contrast signature that touches and fits on the blue line.

• However long it takes, you MUST hold the paper signature still until the Signature appears.

Use two hands and hold still until the Mac finishes its scan and displays the digital image.

• Finally, click "Done" to save the new signature.

(4) After you have saved the first new signature, the "Manage Signatures..." window will show you the saved one(s) and give the option of creating others.

Perhaps I am again confused by your lack of punctuation, Trev?

• I see only one hand in the image.

Preview > Preferences... has nothing to do with this.

Your picture of "uncreased signed paper" looks creased, not white, and MUCH smaller

than the sheet of computer paper I use.

I will try to help one more time. Continue on from my previous post.

(FYI, the "EZ Jim" in images below is one inch high and two inches wide.)

Assuming you have no save signatures, use the following method after you can see the image

in the "Manage Signatures" camera view window:

a) Use heavy, dark ink on bright white printer paper.

Hold it steady in front of your camera so it is shows in the "Manage Signatures" window.

Here is a picture of how I hold mine:

User uploaded file

b) You will see your paper signature backward in the "Manage Signatures" window.

Hold absolutely still until the scan is complete (until the right-way-round image also appears in the window.)

Click "Done" after you can see both signature versions in the "Manage Signatures" window:

User uploaded file

c) After you have clicked "Done", your "Manage Signatures" window will change to show

your signatureand the button you can use to create additional signatures:

User uploaded file

d) After you have saved the first signature and quit Preview,

you will see the saved signature when you next select Preview > Annotate > Signature:

User uploaded file

e) If the above doesn't work for you, I suggest that you contact your local Apple retailer, consultant, or trainer for help.
