Alternative to Java for iPad Pro

On my new iPad Pro I want to download puzzles from my local newspaper site and it requires that Safari have Java. When I go to Java site to download it, they say that there is no Java for Safari for mobile devices. Wha...? Surely there is an alternative. Any advice?
