iPod classic 160GB charging question

i have an iPod classic 160GB, it is the 6/7th gen.

In my car im using an alpine kca-420i ipod unit which allows me to use my iPod in my 2004 bmw M3.

I'm pretty certain that it charges 12V, and for it to charge my iPhone i have to use a 12V - 5V adaptor. I proved this works by not using it with my phone and it didnt charge, then i used it and it worked.

But when i use my iPod classic with or without the charger, i get a charging symbol where the battery life is. This confuses me a bit, as when its plugged in regardless of battery state it shows full and charging, but when i unplug it the battery life may show half charged, or sometimes be dead!

In the pictures i took the charging symbol is the same:

Can someone tell me if i defiantly need the 5V adaptor to charge the classic or not? Thanks

The iPod Classic does charge from 12v, whereas (and as you say) the iPhone does not.

However, the Classic often displays the battery full icon (as shown in your pictures) when first connected to power, even if it is not fully charged. But after a short time, the icon (usually) changes to the charging symbol. It's a quirk of the Classic.

Were your pictures taken immediately after connecting the iPod and have you left it connected and then looked again after a while to see if the symbol changes?
