What adjustment do I have to make to stop my Apple TV remote from contolling my nearby iMac? iMac late 2009 OS X 10.6.8

My Apple TV remote (just bought and installed yesterday (1-23-16) will control my nearby iMac, causing iTunes to start up.

The Apple TV is running from a modem/router (DOCSIS 3.0) through Cat 5 cable. It's not directly tied into the iMac.

What adjustment (aside from moving the Computer - not gonna happen) to get this to stop?

I've put the iMac to sleep, and as soon as I touch a button on the remote, the whole thing (iMac and iTunes) fires right up again.

Not sure what the OS is on the Apple TV.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Your iMac has a infrared reciever and is seeing the commands from the ATV. Read this and note by default the remote is not paired.

Pair or unpair your Apple Remote with your Apple TV (3rd generation or earlier) - Apple Support

Try pairing the remote with the ATV and see if it works. Not sure how old your iMac is but my 2008 I think came with a remote. It is long gone, but if your iMac is from that era, I would also suggest you get the remote that came with your iMac and pair it to the iMac as well. This way it will definitely ignore your ATV remote.

Also on your iMac check system prefs and if my memory serves me, look for some panel about the remote. I think there may be one to turn it off.
