My Apple TV is "bricked". I'm trying to figure out what generation it is so I know which cable to attempt to reset it with.

Thank you so much, that worked. It's a second generation. I only have a USB-C cable, but it plugs into my Apple TV unit. Can that work to reset the unit?
You need a micro-USB cable on that model.

Or would it be better to just upgrade to the latest Apple TV? This one is 5 and a half years old...
