I did not request it to find my phone and I gat an email from apple support stating that a tone was played to my phone. how can I find out who/what requested my phone to alert me to its location by plying the tone? or was/has someone hacked my iTunes account

If you are the only person with access to your Apple ID - then you might want to immediately change the password to your Apple ID and also ensure that two-factor authentication is enabled. If you share your apple id with multiple devices or members of your household - then you might want to check with others to see if they accidentally opened the Find iPhone app on a device or logged on to iCloud.com and performed find my iPhone function from there. Find My iPhone feature bypasses the two-factor authentication when trying to locate an iPhone - whereas all other login attempts to your apple id - will send you an approval code to one of your "trusted" apple devices or a text message to a non-apple device. It is possible that you could contact apple support and ask them if they can tell you "where" the find my iPhone request originated from (or rather the device that requested the tone to be sent). That may lead you to the source. There should be instructions in the "Tone" email indicating what to do next if you did not request the tone to be sent.
