Since El Capitan... no Emoji!

Since upgrading to El Capitan I cannot get Emoji icons anymore! I pull down the Edit menu to get "Emoji & Symbols", but nothing happens. The Emoji window doesn't even appear. I have made many attempts, all to no avail.

Another problem that I am having is that my desktop items (TextEdit documents) often move to a different location on my desktop after I've opened them. This also happened with Yosemite (or the one preceding Yosemite), but eventually it went back to normal.

I hope that Apple fixes the Emoji glitch. (Or has anyone here figured out how to make it work in the interim?)

Hi Kathy Kat,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with El Capitan on your Mac. I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are seeing with regards to the emojis; are you just not seeing the emoji option within the Character Viewer window, or are you not seeing the Character Viewer at all? You may want to double-check the process outlined in the following article:

How to type accents, emoji, and symbols on your Mac - Apple Support

You can also try activating the Character Viewer from the Input menu bar item, as noted in this article:

OS X El Capitan: Use the Keyboard Viewer

With regards to the orientation or organization of files on your desktop, you may also find the information and options listed in this article useful:

Cheers

Hi Brenden,

I appreciate your reply very much. The situation was, I wasn't even getting the Character Viewer at all... but of course, life being what it is, after I posted my question it started working! Prior to that I made several attempts, all of which failed. I hope it doesn't malfunction again. But it's something I had no control over.

My desktop folders have also behaved since posting my comment (natch!). But it wasn't a matter of choosing an organization method – they simply moved by themselves from the right side of my screen to almost the middle, leaving a blank space where their proper place is. I also went through this for several months after I bought this computer, but it straightened itself out. I figured it must have been a kink worked out in whatever OS version I was using at the time. And then it happened again right after updating to El Capitan. Hopefully it'll be okay now.

Thank you for the links too! I'm going to check them out right now.

Kathy 🙂
