Q: Could i use a LAN from my fiber Optic Modem or my Router to WAN on my Time Capsule?

Hi

I wanna try using my Time Capsule to Back Up my iMac( Retina 5K, 27-Inch, Late 2014) processor: 4GHz Intel Core i7, Memory 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, startup disk: SSD (1TB) Graphics AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB.

I use to have a Fiber Optic Modem, from which is connected a Router for Home use. Am I able to connect a LAN(RJ45) To WAN on my New Time Capsule? bearing in mind that my Modem have only 1 WAN to Router and 2 LANs to PC + LANs from my Main Router.

I was wondering if i use the only WAN from Modem to my Time Capsule, i don't have any other way to use neither the Router nor anything else?!?!

Looking forward reading your response

Many Thanks

Majid

Your Time Capsule is also a router, use it for wireless and eliminate the third party router. Connect the Ethernet from your modem to the time capsule and the time capsule to the computer, open Time Machine and select the TC as the backup drive and let TM do it's thing. Hi Mike

Thank you for your reply. Actually my Modem ( China Telecom for instance has 4 WANs instead of 1) it's a fiber optic modem, and for the technician who installed it, 1WAN 1 goes to my Third party ROUTER, the 2nd WAN goes for Itv (chinese tv channel) and the other 2 WANs could go to PC, so am i suppose to connect 1 of these WANs to Time Capsule as WAN from Modem to WAN in Time Capsule? that is the question.

As for dropping of eliminating the Third Party Router, it is out of question, as i use the 4 LANs from my Router to connect to 2 TVs (wired) as IPTV Boxes for foreign TV Channels through Internet.

If the WAN from Modem works on my Time Capsule and also on My Router(Third party one) that would be awesome, but before using this solution i preferred to be cautious and ask before doing it.

Hope this will give you an insight of how my Modem and router looks like.

    Many Thanks Mike

I've never used a setup with two routers, I can't answer that. I still say drop the third party router, use one port on the modem for the Time Capsule and the other three for your television. My setup is much simpler, direct cable to each of 3 TVs and my cable modem, ethernet from the modem to the TimeCapsule and ethernet from the Time Capsule to my iMac. Everything else, three iPads, two iPhones, a Macbook, two Xboxes, a Wii and an Apple TV connect wirelessly to the TC.
