My new iMac won't accept my Sony DCR-HC42, mini DV camcorder. Can I install iLife 09 and use that software on the El Capitan OS?

I have a lot of Hi8 and mini DV tapes and no way to import them into iMovie 10.1.1,on my new iMac. Can I load iLife '09 onto my iMac using El Capitan. Is my problem a hardware or software problem? Thanks

Do you have the Hi8 and mini DV cameras?

The other alternative, which has worked for me, was to hook the two cameras together and send the Hi8 tapes to the mini DV camera. They get digitized when they are copied onto the DV tapes. My mini DV camera uses a FW400 cable so I bought a FW400-FW800 adapter and a TB box from Other World Computing that has USB 3 and FW 800 outlets among others. With the FW adapter you are able to use the FW400 cable that came with the camera.

It may very well be possible to use the mini DV camera as an A>D converter only by leaving the mini DV tape out and just passing the signal to iMovie.

Good luck
