Q: repair bootcamp after creating new partition

I installed windows 10 via bootcamp, without any external drives, on my 256GB ssd. I then used disk utitlity to create a shared partition by shrinking the OSX partition. After that, when I boot into windows it shows me the recovery screen. Please, help me with each step. I don't want to mess anything up.

Thanks.

Okay, I found my problem. I had installed NTFS-3G, an application that allows writing on NTFS partitions from OS X. After I uninstalled this, and rebooted, its working. I'll try making my new startup repair disk.

okay, i've looked into the article and found much information on the internet, but I still can't find a way to boot into the installer, on my usb. Is there another way? Whenever I boot into windows it just starts "Preparing automatic repair" and doesn't give me advanced startup options.

fyi windows says its error code 0xc000000e

You need to rebuild your BCD. It is corrupt. Use Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd . Please see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927392 .

If you power down and power up your mac with the USB connected and hold alt/option key, do you see the USB as a boot selection? How was this USB created?

I used diskutil to create it, and it didn't work. Now I got a friend's windows computer to create a usb boot disk using UltraISO. It booted up, and started repair.

I used command prompt to do as the intructions say:

    >bootrec /rebuildbcd

Scanning all disks for Windows installations.

Please wait, since this may take a while...

    Sucessfully scanned Windows installations.

    Total identified Windows installations: 1

    [1] C:\Windows

Add installations to boot list? Yes(Y)/No(N)/All(A): y

The requested system device cannot be found.

    What's the problem?

Plus, I can't type backslash in the repair command prompt. It seems like the keyboard layout is different.

The S: (System partition) is shared with the Apple EFI partition, which must be assigned a drive letter using Windows diskpart. This is where the BCD is located.

Please see Re: Bootcamp Blue Screen winload.efi and THIS for reference.

Thanks so much, it boots normally. I hope others will use this as a good reference.

Please back up OS X, Windows and create a Windows System Restore point. You may also want to make a backup of the Microsoft tree on the EFI partition.

Hi, I'm having this same issue with Windows 10 not booting after adding a FAT32 partition to be used as a shared drive between Windows and OSX.  I disabled SIP and created the hybrid MBR described above, after which tests 1-3 did not work, but test 4 does.  I created a Windows installation USB drive with a friend's computer and am able to access the repair tools at startup. The results of bootrec/rebuildbcd were the same as above, however I'm stuck at assigning a letter to the EFI partition as it does not show up when using Windows diskpart.

Below are my results for diskutil list, diskutil cs list, sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0, and sudo fdisk /dev/disk0.

Any direction you provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

I installed Windows late last year and I do not recall whether or not I used the EFI boot.  The bootcamp drive does show up in finder and I can see the files.

Since you have two shared partitions, do both of them show up in OS X Finder?

Can you post the output of

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s5 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

"Bootcamp" and "Shared" both show up in Finder.  Bootcamp is formatted NTFS so it is read only from OS X.  The shared folder is formatted FAT to be read/write from both operating systems.

    $ sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -c

    The file headers are correct.

On the 2014 Macs, Windows can be installed using either BIOS or EFI. BIOS uses a MBR, but EFI does not. Your specific model supports creating a USB installer. Can You use BC Assistant, choose the first two options and create a USB Installer? This can be used for Windows Startup Repair.

W10 should bring up a Recovery Console if it fails to boot three or more times. Do you see a Recovery Console?
