After some years that I use FCPX, even now I can't understand the reason that why sometimes some clips are enclosed in a "close " storyline like this
and sometimes no (yet in this following example there are transitions and other complex clips like in the first example....)
Connected clips linked by transitions need to be in a storyline. Clips on the primary storyline do not need to be linked with a shelf because they're already on a storyline and are linked to each other by magnetism.
Your first screen shot contains a mix of secondary storylines and connected clips. Your second contains justconnected clips (and the primary).

But so, how can I split a secondary storyline in a point where there isn't any transition?
Can I?
Not really. You can select clips and lift them out of the storyline with Opt-Cmd-up arrow. This will replace the clips with a gap clip. Or you can drag them from the storyline, which will close the gap.
