Contact Totals Gone?

I have a power user with thousands of contacts in their phone. He used to check the totals at the bottom of the contacts screen with that in his contacts total on his Mac to make sure they were in sync (we had an issue once that caused them to be out of sync hence the apprehension). That total is no longer there (he doesn't sync with iCloud so that option of checking there is out). Is there another way to get the totals number back on the screen or see how many contacts he has int he phone?
