Q: IPad mini storage issues. What is using it and why does it keep disappearing

Hi

I have an IPad Mini 2 (32GB model). I bought this around 3 months ago have had regular storage issues with it.

Firstly I thought a sync with ICloud photo library was the culprit, so I did a complete restore and turned off iCloud Photo Library. This did not fix it, the storage over a few days just decreased. I then thought it could have been VLC...so I removed this and did another restore.

The restore was carried out 5 days ago and I had 19GB free, now it is down to 6.6GB (and I haven't installed any new apps from the app store), There are no videos, photos and only 128mb of songs.

When I go to Storage under settings it says Used - 19.8GB and Available 6.6GB, When I add up all the applications which are using storage it comes in at 5.9GB

Can anyone help find what is using the  13.9GB?

Many thanks

    Hi peelola,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I'm sorry to hear that you are having these issues with your iPad. While I can't say for certain what may be taking up this space, if you continue to have unexpected or unexplained storage usage you may find the information and steps outlined in the following article helpful. In particular, you may want try using iTunes as described to get a breakdown of your storage usage by type. Also note that for certain cached storage (such as is used for certain types of iTunes streams and downloads), iOS will automatically manage the usage and will free up more space as needed.
