Q: iMac late 2009 keeps rebooting

Hi All,

I have a older iMac (late 2009) that keeps rebooting on me. I have run all the hardware diagnostics I could find and it seems solid but when I book it to full OS it reboots any ware between a day and a week.I can't read kernel dumps so I have no clue why it's rebooting. I am afraid it going to turn out to be the motherboard but as I said it seems solid under diagnostics, stayed up forever. It has been happening regardless of the OS on it so points to hardware problem.

I did buy the device used, it had been dropped but after replacing the glass it booted just fine and seemed to run ok for a while, full disclosure. I know PC desktops can get dusty inside causing over heating and I would just crack the case and blow it out, does the same thing happen to iMacs?

What would you kind folks need from me to help? A crash dump?

Tom

My iMac is late 2009, 3.06GHz processor, 16GB memory, 1TB SATA Harddrive, and ATI Radeon HD 4670 256Mb

Is that good enuf for hardware profile or do you want System report? Also how to post panic log, keeps killing my browser window when I tried to cut and paste it in. I do not see an attache button on the editor.

Please post the last panic log, to learn how to do this please click Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Support. Once you have the complete log, copy and paste it in the reply to this message.

How do I post the panic log? It kills my browser window when I try and cut/paste it. Do you need the whole thing? Its 350KB is size.

Also I'm pretty sure that it's solid in safe mode, but I'll try it again tonight.

Yes, the whole thing and do a copy and paste. If you cannot then please post an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

If you would like more info on what EtreCheck is, simply click the link and you will find a description of the app.

Had another crash and got the popup screen at boot, here is the output from that. Also got the same symptoms in SafeMode as well, a crash after a day and a half; logged if but not working on it at the time. Some other information, not sure if this is related as i hear of a number having the same issue but I keep having applications crash, mostly the browsers (Chrome an Safari) but also Mail and my Desktop Clock app. not so much other apps. I use OpenOffice a lot and it's been stable (until the system crashes). I run fsck periodically after crashes to keep my FS in good shape and I TimeMachine my main drive. .

Oh Yes, one other thiing. About 2 years ago I did a fresh format and reinstall of the OS from the diag boot screen, then did do a Time Machine restore after that. Was no better.

One more thing. Here are the temperature sensors output. Not sure what normal is but some look pretty hot.

Update your Virtual Box software and see if that helps. I would still like to see the hardware profile that is at the end of the panic report.

I'm pretty sure I was getting the reboots before I installed Virtual box, but to be safe I just now updated to current as you suggested.

It's not likely that they're causing panics but you've got adware installed and they must be removed. The simple method is to download and run MalwareBytes http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php

The more tedious but usually equally effective Apple method Stop pop-up ads and adware in Safari - Apple Support

I use and recommend MalwareBytes although someone will be along soon scolding you for considering it. Your choice.

    Adware:

        Omnibar

        /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client

        Searchme

        ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer

        4 adware files found. [Remove]

Yeah, I saw the ad ware and I downloaded the tool and removed them but the iMac hung on a reboot (pings but nmap shows no ports open and I can;t ssh or vnc into it) and I'm remote so I need to get home and fix it. I also plan on running a FSCK (disk check at the diag screen) at the same time then rerun EtreCheck.
