Q: How to delete photos from device but still remain in iCloud

I have an iPad that is low on space. If I try to delete a photo, a box comes up saying that it will also delete from my iCloud Photo Library across all of my other devices also. So how do I delete photos specifically from my iPad but they still remain in iCloud photo library?

iPad Air, iOS 9.2.1, iPad Air 2

    Hi tyler.stitcher,

I understand that you have concerns about the amount of space you are using on your iPad, and are utilizing iCloud Photo Library. You may want to consider optimizing the storage of iCloud Photo Library photos on your device using this setting:

Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:

    • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
    • On your Mac, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.

If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

If that does not provide enough space, you may want to consider turning off the iCloud Photo Library on that device:

How do I turn off iCloud Photo Library on just one device?

To turn off iCloud Photo Library for a single iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and turn off iCloud Photo Library.

To turn off iCloud Photo Library for a single Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud > Options next to Photos, then deselect iCloud Photo Library.

If you have Optimize Storage turned on, you might not have all of your original photos and videos on your device. To download the original photos and videos on your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and select Download and Keep Originals. On your Mac, open Photos, choose Photos > Preferences, then select Download Originals to this Mac. Then you can turn iCloud Photo Library off. You can also select the photos and videos that you want to download from iCloud.com.
