Logic Pro X 10.1.2 crashes after launch

Hey guys, I have a problem! After updating Logic to 10.1.2 I decided to clean up my plugins categories in plugin manager and I deleted them all (I prefer when they sorted by manufacturer). And when I pressed "done" button logic crashed. And now it's crashed right after updating information about Audio Unit plugins.

User uploaded file

I tried to restore logic from Time Machine, tried to reinstall it, tried to delete all audio unit plugins, but nothing helps. How can I fix it?

Logic Pro X, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

I've tried to post the crash log, but this forum will not let me due to "invalid characters." Suggestions?

Typically this could mean one of the following...

1) One of your plugins needs an update..... (Note: Melodyne 4 is being reported as still causing issues even after an update)

2) You are running a wrapper such as 32lives than needs updating and then those wrapped plugins need unwrapping and rewrapping again.

3) if you renamed any of the plugins in the Plugin Manger.. make sure you used less than 11 Chars in each name...

4) You moved some of Logic's content to an external HD in the past and used Aliases instead of Symlinks..

1. That's a possibility. But, with over 60 plug-ins to check. Gee. Not your problem, so thanks for the suggestion. It would be nice if Apple/Logic provided some sort of tool to pinpoint troublesome plug-ins. Thinking this might be a problem, I removed all of the plug-ins from the Components folder. Logic still would not complete start-up. But, I still think there may be an issue here.

2. Don't think so. But, maybe some of my Waves stuff is in a wrapper. I'll check this. Thanks.

3. Nope. No re-naming.

4. Nothing has been moved.

Thanks, Art, for the suggestions. I've got back to my previous version of Logic Pro. It works well enough. At least it doesn't crash on start-up. It still wants to crash more than any previous version of Logic I've used, and I've been using Logic since ver 1.8 circa 1993, but I can get through a session without major difficulties.

Note: There are two components folders... The User Library one and the System Library one...

System path is... /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components

and User lib path is ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components (Note the Tilde symbol (~) at the beginning of the path)

To test if its a User Library related issue (Permissions and the like..) create a new Admin account in OS X's System prefs > Users & Groups..

Now log out of your original account and log into that one and launch Logic..

If it runs without issue then there is likely something in your User Lib/Account that is causing the problem.. Could be a plugin.. driver.. or an app that is conflicting.. or a permissions/corruption related problem..

If you cannot find anything.. Download and Install Etrecheck...

http://etrecheck.com/

Then please paste up the report it generates, here...

gforrest15,

Do you have Melodyne 4 installed on your system? If so, that's a known problem and needs an update from Celemony to fix it.

Other than that from the Etrecheck report.. a few things stand out...

1) You are using a very old USB Audio interface (AUDIOTRAK MAYA44 USB) that doesn't appear to be supported under recent OS X versions including El Cap ... It might work or it may not.. There are conflicting reports around the net.

2) Make sure you are running the latest version of all your Native Instruments drivers and apps... via their Service Center app

Unconnected but important...

3) You have several items that are failing to load, on your system, (See the [Failed] tag......) Uninstall or update these items...

Feb 6, 2016 9:30 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Thanks The Art Of Sound

I only use the Maya now and again for recording dj mixes and have that unplugged but will have a look at that. I will update the NI drivers too. No Melodyne installed.

I have found that I can start Logic by opening it up without core audio by pressing the ctrl key after the startup icon but then I cannot re enable sound from logic.

Many thanks for taking a look, will keep trying.

Feb 6, 2016 8:22 PM in response to gforrest15

As it seems to be something affecting Core Audio and something that resides or is connected to the User Library...

Things to check for include

See #3 first........

1) Plugins installed in ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components (Note the Tilde symbol (~) before the path to indicate its the user Library one)

2) Delete Logic's preferences...

You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. Quit Logic Pro X
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this.
  6. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  7. Restart the computer.

Note: If you cannot find any of the files listed above, you didn’t follow the instruction correctly! 🙂

3) As you have NI hardware drivers installed (S4 and X1) check the following...

https://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/knowledge-base/show/4431/os-x-10.1 1-el-capitan-compatibility-news/

Especially the latter part about legacy equipment and crashes... and the updated drivers provided via a link there as both yours appear to be badly out of date...

Feb 7, 2016 5:25 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Hi again, thanks for the further advice.

I have no listed plug ins in the components folder, is this correct?

So far I have tried -

Deleted all NI drivers on my system.

Deleted Logics preferences

Uninstalled the programmes that failed the Eterecheck test

Tried starting Logic via startup key commands - Logic loads with the Ctrl click and launch with no core audio but then I cannot re enable audio when its open. This also causes another problem as I can not scan for the audio units as this option is greyed out in the menu within Logic. - When I change the audio out back to system setting , Logic initialises core audio then crashes.

Removed Maya44 usb audio interface control panel and unplugged (didnt use this anyway, always core audio)

Removed all NI plugins in the Library/Audio/Plug-Ins folder

Uninstalled and reinstalled Logic

Tried not looking at the screen when opening Logic in the hope that this will work as it will take longer for me to see the error message!!!!!

Is there any way of replacing core audio?

Any other suggestions would be welcome, ta

Feb 7, 2016 8:05 AM in response to gforrest15

I think you are skipping something important based on your comments...

I have no listed plug ins in the components folder, is this correct?

There are at least TWO different Component Folders on your system.

The System Library one... and one for each of your User Accounts....

The paths to each are as follows...

The System Library one is found at /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components

and the User Library one (when you are signed into that User Account) is found at ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components

It's not unusual for the User Library's Component one to be empty....

However, because Logic launches correctly when you are signed into a different User Account this usually means that the cause of your issue is located in or connected to the User Account that causes Logic to crash when you are signed in to it.. That library is the ~/Library/ and not the /Library/ one...

There could be something in one of the other folders in that User Library that is at the root of your issue.. like the ~Library/Audio/Midi Drivers folder for example

Or...

It could be a permissions / corruption related problem with that User Account... that is preventing something from working correctly

Core Audio itself is working fine as Logic launches correctly under a different User Account. Its something else... that's causing this.

You can try Tyrann0s's suggestion earlier in this thread

Delete ~/Music/Audio Music Apps (when signed into your original User Account...)

...as again that's a User Library item he is referring to and again, that could be the cause of your issue... (Ensuring you do have a full working backup of that folder before doing so..) as it's possible one of those DB files has become corrupted... and needs to be regenerated by Logic..

Uninstalling and installing Logic isnt likely to help given it works fine under a different User Account.

Finally, to confirm you got everything I mentioned, please run Etrecheck again and look through it's report to confirm you have indeed removed all NI drivers...

Feb 7, 2016 9:58 AM in response to The Art Of Sound

Well after a very frustrating weekend I have got it working again, many thanks for the help on here. I ended up using the plug ins folder from my guest account and transferring it to my main account as well as deleting everything else that wasn't in the guest account when compared to the main one and it worked. I have made a copy of all the folders that I know have nothing dodgy in them now as well.

The Art Of Noise - Serious thanks as I suspect it was a midi driver for the S4, didn't think to get rid of these as well as the normal NI drivers.

Back on it, phew.

You are welcome.. and yes, I'd bet on the S4 too given the info on the NI website about such issues.. that I linked to.... in regards to crashes and El Cap..

Anyhow, really glad to hear you are back up and running....

Cheers..
