How much would Apple charge to remove and format iMac HD (no applecare)

I recently bought a 2010 27" iMac from someone. It is stuck in recovery mode and can't reinstall the OS.

The iMac needs to be taken apart by Apple and have the HD manually formatted.

Any ballpark idea of what this would cost? The seller is willing to refund me the amount. I don't have time to take it to an Apple store in the near future so I'm hoping someone here can give me an honest figure to tell him.

Thank you.

I am in the US.

I did call, and they were very vague and basically said I need to bring it in.

Whenever I go into recovery HD and try to reinstall the OS, it goes through the loading bar and then just reverts back to the main screen.

Apple claims they need to take it apart and check it out.

So I guess my new question would be, how much does apple charge to replace an iMac drive? (minus the cost of the drive)

Thanks!

Once again we have absolutely no idea. Call again and ask what the cost per hour is and then ask how many hours they estimate. If you don't want to do that you can always contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider and ask the same question. If you don't know of any in your area just click https://locate.apple.com/country to begin finding one.

AASP will most likely charge a flat rate - open/remove old drive/install new drive/close it up - $100-$150. Make sure they know and have worked on these before.
