Q: How do I share all of my movie and music files between my iMac, two iPads, my Apple Tv, and my windows laptop (I know, odd one out)

I've got an i Mac as my main computer, a laptop running windows 8.1 as my secondary (portable) backup, my wife has an IPad, I have an IPad, and we have Apple TV connected to our recreation room tv. How do I go about sharing media files (music and movies) between all of my devices? I use ITunes on both my i Mac and Windows laptop to share media, but I'd like to have a central repository for all of the media files and be able to access them from all of my devices.

iMac, iOS 9.2.1

That's what iCloud is for. Of course you need an iCloud account with enough storage to hold all your files.

Not sure if sharing is between ios device is os specific.  You did not provide yours.  Research Apple's Knowledge Base for instructions.

Home Sharing in iTunes has to be turned on for each device. My wife and I have separate iMacs, if we both want to share content on our AppleTV, we turn on Home Sharing in iTunes, select the content and then leave iTunes running so the content is visible. I think if you research Home Sharing in Use Home Sharing to share iTunes content with other devices - Apple Support it will help fill in some information gaps.

    Good luck.

Assuming the sharing is meant only in your local network, Home Sharing is what you are looking for.

iCloud will not help you share anything, as that is not what it is for. While you can upload music files to iCloud Drive, its not meant for that, and neither the music App on iOS devices nor iTunes on the computer will be able to use files on iCloud Drive directly. and the Apple Tv will not be able to access them at all.

Syncing will only help you if all devices can be connected to one computer. Which I assume is not what you want.

Again Home Sharing seems to fit what you want the most.

Use Home Sharing to share iTunes content with other devices - Apple Support

Home Sharing will let you play music from a central library on one computer on any devices including your Apple Tv.

FWIW, I think CMCSK's and rkaufmann87's replies are much better solutions than mine.

If you can't tell, I don't share anything.

    Phil0124's as well.

Thanks. Yes, I'm using Home sharing, but I would like to have all my media files in one place. Can you store all the media on an Apple Wireless Time Capsule and have iTunes on all the devices access that?

Maybe, it depends on the size of the library. Frankly I think thats a poor use of a Time Capsule though. I'd get an External Hard Disk and put all the media on that and if you already of the TC I'd use that for your router and a Time Machine backup. I have all my media on 2-3 EHDs (due to the size of my libraries) and use Home Sharing to connect all the Macs.

Not really. For Home Sharing to work the media needs to be part of an iTunes Library, and that iTunes library is what gets shared out to the network. The computer that owns that iTunes Library still needs to be on for Home Sharing to work.

You can use the TC to store the media, but one computer needs to have it all as part of its itunes Library so it can be shared. Having just media files stored in a TC will not work. As there is no way for iOS devices and Apple Tvs to access it directly.

Again you can have one computer hold all the media in a library while that library actually resides in a central location such as a partitioned Time Capsule, and  that computer can share it out to the network, so iPads and Apple Tvs can access it.
