I want to use my all in one iMac as the monitor for a newer Mac mini. The monitor is in great shape, just an old outdated computer. Is there a way to use it as a display for the mini? Do I need to purchase an adaptor cable?
Not without a product such as ScreenRecycler. All of these work over a network and require a standalone monitor to set up.

Sadly no.
You must have an iMac that supports Target Display Mode. This wasn't available until Late 2009 models.
