Q: Windows installer won't open. Stuck with black screen.

Hello all,

I'm trying to install windows 7 from an iso file using Bootcamp assistant, Version 6.0.1, but unfortunately the windows installer just will not open so i'm stuck with that black screen. I've let my MacBookPro sit around with that black screen for over half an hour and after a while it gets really really hot so I interrupted the "process".

I've reset the NVRAM (command+alt+p+r) which didn't do anything.

I did follow bootcamp instructions. I downloaded the correct drivers for my model of mac book pro, I created a bootable drive and partitioned my disk.

The forum has quite a lot of "black screen issues" but none of their solutions worked out for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

    Hi Loner T,

I bought my iso online as a download.

What do you mean by "Can you request a physical DVD from your Windows retailer?"

    Thanks

My concern is the issue with the install.wim file and it being corrupted. If the online retailer can send you a physical DVD (without charging you more money), we can try and use the DVD. Can you also post the MD5 of just this file? I will try and find the various installers and see if I can find a valid copy.

    Hi Loner T,

    The md5 of the install.wim is:00fe241e74e72f2a0ca758bc3c2f1184.

I guess the retailer will not send me a windows DVD because it is a german website.

Can I download a new install.wim ( or the whole iso ) from here and replace the corrupt one?

    Thanks

Can you try to download it from here as a test - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/home ?

    Hi Loner T,

Since the ISO seems to be corrupt and I can't download the ISO from Microsoft because the product-key is invalid, I will try to return the defective product to the retailer. I do have a WD Scorpio Blue HD I pulled out of my old Lenovo laptop. Can I buy a case like this one and use the HD with the pre-installed operating system( win 7) just as it would have been if I installed win7 on my MBP?

    Thanks!

Using a drive from a Windows laptop can cause new problems, because it may have drivers which are not valid for a Mac.

It is strange that your Product Key is invalid. The Product Key should be universal.

    Hi Loner T,

    Thanks for your reply.

I think that the website which I bought my ISO from is "fake" because I simply can't reach their support. Also There are a couple of articles in the web in which microsoft warns from buying ISOs from their website.

If I do a complete erase of the HD all drivers should be gone but the operating system would still be on right? If I had done that I could install the BC5 support software and that would be like having Win on my MBP just running it of an external HD.

    Thanks

Can you get a refund for your purchase?

If you erase the drive, everything, including the OS will be gone. There is a utility called SysPrep, which can make your Windows a 'generic' installation without any specific hardware drivers. Be careful, because PC manufacturers will put hidden partitions which are used for recovery and have OEM tools.

    Hi Loner T,

I'm not sure if I can get my purchase refunded but l will definitely try.

What should I do with SysPrep I don't think that I can run it on my mac since it is a windows app.

I don't understand what you mean by this:

Could l copy the operating system of the HD, save it elsewhere, and re-install it onto the HD?

Also what would the problem be with drivers not valid for my mac you wrote about in an earlier post? At the time my MBP would access data on the HD it would run windows and that shouldn't be a problem should it?

    Thank you for your help!

    1. If you use a disk from an existing PC, it has drivers for that specific hardware. SysPrep is a Windows application to remove any hardware-specific information from a Windows installation. It can only be used a limit number of times.

    2. You cannot copy OS installations from one disk to another and have it run from the new disk. It is unfortunate that it has never been this simple.

    3. The WD Scorpio from your Lenovo is a Windows installation. It will have problems booting up on a Mac due to hardware differences between the two. If you want to play, then you can try the enclosure you have mentioned and test.

    Hi Loner T,

Could I run SysPrep on my HD and then ( because win7 is pre-installed ) just use it as an external windows drive as described here?

    Thanks

Be careful, the link has the 1.1Gb SLIVER on the internal disk. This usually contains the MBR and Bootmanager.

    Hi Loner T,

I tried again and I finally reached the support of the website where I bought win7. They allowed me to re-download the Iso but I still got the same md5. This would mean that it's the exact same file and that it is corrupt too correct?

Can you find out what the correct md5 of a windows 7home premium 64 bit is?

    Thanks!

Do you have a full ISO, just a install.wim? If you get the same MD5, burn the ISO to a DVD and use an external Optical drive to test if the ISO will boot?

Does your W7 product key work with the Microsoft website to let you download a new ISO? Is this ISO a combined W7 32-bit/64-bit?

    Hi Loner T,

My windows retailer gave me an alternative download link to try. I will try to use that iso when I have some time.
