Mac Mini sound help? Connected to monitor w/ sound coming from monitor. Tried plugging external speaker into back of unit and still get only sound from monitor, nothing from speakers.

How is the monitor connected?
Are plugging the speakers to the 3.5 mm headphone jack? And not the 3.5 mm line-in jack?
If you go to System preferences>Sounds>Output can you select the speakers/headphone?
1. HDMI Monster Cable from HDMI Mac Port to HDMI input on the monitor.
2. Plugged into the Mac input w/ speaker symbol, not the one w/ headphone symbol.
3. No. Output choices are: "Internal Speakers" (Mac) or "HDMI" (monitor). It doesn't seem to see the speakers.

Your Mac Mini (you did not specify model) likely has two 3.5 mm jack. One for the headphones which is also used to connect speakers, and one for audio line-in. There are not separate speaker and headphone jacks. See the following for ports on the 2012 Mac Mini

So, I plugged the speakers into the "output port" and the sound moved to the monitor.
Under Sound, I still only see internal and HDMI, no additional choice.
Restart! Always remember to restart.
New choice (headphone input) shows in Sound... and IS the speakers.
