Setting up local DNS

Hello all

We are using Mac OS X Server 10.3.3 and I would like to set-up a local DNS address to access the server. For example, I would like to be able to use mail.domain.com to set-up the mail clients instead of remembering the IP address.

Right now, the external DNS is working. So if I am at home and type the DNS address in my mail client, I am able to connect. But as soon as I try to do the same locally, it does not work. Although I have tried a few different things and did some research in the other posts, I could not find an answer. Can anybody suggest a solution?

Thanks from a not-so-knowledgeable-mac-server-user...

Rick

Unless you have a really serious reason to stay at 10.3.3, you should update your server to 10.3.9 , and not just because the updates are there.
I'd take it to 10.3.9 and apply available security updates as well.

Assuming you have a backup.

Now then, as for DNS, public-facing DNS will be different from "local" DNS, if your server is behind a Router doing NAT.

What is your server's IP address ? 192.168.x.x , 172.16.x.x, 10.x.x.x ?

See http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html

You can setup "local" DNS for your OS X Server using the lan/local/private IP address.

You should get the O'Reilly book on DNS & BIND by Liu & Albitz for your bookshelf,
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/dns4

But since you're new to this, I suggest you read through John DeTroye's excellent Tips & Tricks:
