What is in OTHER on the HD?

My disk utility is showing 121GB out of 250GB on disk in Other? Anyone know what is included in other? only have 20GBs in docs. Only 17GB left on my disk. Starting to have problems with speed and lock ups. Would like to move or eliminate some space to see if that would help.
