iTunes match loads all music to mu iPhone

After subscribing to iTunes match and activating iTunes match on my iOS device the library begins to download until it completely fills my phone. if I delete albums more albums download. The whole thing makes my iPhone 6s unusable. Note I have automatic downloads tuned off. it's happened a few times now. To correct I turn off iTunes match and delete all music. Not sure how else to add music. My 2008 macbook Pro OSX10.7 is running iTunes 12.2.2.25 but is not compatible with my 6S (which would have been good to know before bailing on my 5S).

I'm using iOS 9.2 on a 6S. Is it all or nothing? I just want a few albums on my iPhone?
