Can anyone recommend a good chair to sit in while working in Logic?

Hi,

I am sitting in front of this computer a lot.

Lower back bugging me. I have a lame chair.

Anyone working in Logic a lot who can recommend a decent seat/chair to work in?

Thanks.

The absolutely best chair in the world... and seen in many movies, ads, studios, is the Herman Miller Aeron chair.

http://www.hermanmiller.com/aeron/

It's expensive, though. Retails for around $800, and it'll set you back at least $500 on craigslist/ebay. If you've ever sat in one, though, you'd know why. It's just supremely comfortable and you can sit in it for hours without your legs shifting around, butt getting hot, etc.

A step down, but still good, is the Ikea Verksam chair:

http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=12&langId=- 1&catalogId=10101&productId=43010

It's slightly less expensive, but still one of the more expensive chairs out there. (P.S. I've never owned a Verksam but my friend has one and it's comfortable. I've also read that some people's verksams aren't very good quality so ymmv.)

If you're really not looking to spend more than $100 or so, then just stop by your local Costco or Office Depot. A new chair is better than a lame chair. My experience with these, however, is usually pretty bad. Chairs usually last about 2 years before the seat cushion starts going bad, or parts start falling off, etc.

Be sure to look for strong armrests and firm cushions. Leather is nice but can get hot and sweaty, and my experience with cloth chairs is usually a bit better. Mesh is nice as well (like the Aeron chair). There are a lot of knockoff Aeron chairs out there but none really feel like an Aeron.

Try a BodyBilt chair. Look at the linear tracking arm accessory at the bottom of this page. My right mouse arm kind of levitates.

They have seat options that are formed to fit the legs.

Check out their chair selector

I didn't buy direct from them, but found a local dealer who would give me a better price.

Another vote for the Aeron chair... i bought one this year and it is really great... Note, it is not for everyone.. you need to try these things.

One thing to think of when choosing a chair, is that, you do not want a chair that makes you lazy. Remember, that it is all about retaining great posture. Regular breaks are always necessary, no matter what type of chair you choose.

One of the best aspects of the Aeron chair, is the mesh. even in the warmest of studios, you will not get a sweaty butt! 😉

The adjustment options are superb .. but again, I stress, it's not for everyone.

Far more important than the type of chair is the height of the chair relative to your work surface. Whilst sat on your chair, let your arms hang loose from the shoulders. Raise your forearms so they are parallel to the floor. If your chair is the correct height, your arms should just rest on the table top. At the same time, your thighs should also be parallel to the ground, so you may need a foot rest. Get these two things wrong & you will have body problems irrespective of the chair you choose.

There should be more information about this topic in the literature that came with your computer.

M,

I spent 23 years in all kinds of chairs as a broadcast digital video editor.

I know lower back pain! Now I'm not discounting a good chair! You need a great chair if your gonna sit for 10, 14, 18 hours days but even the best chairs still need help when it comes to your lower back.

You need to get the proper lordosis (spinal curvature) in your lower back to prevent the low level injuries to your discs that sitting for long period can create.

Even with a great chair you'll still need this:

A McKenzie Lumbar support. They are cheap. Buy one for your car also. You'll notice the difference right away.

I concur with the people recommending the Herman Miller chairs. I'm a dispatcher for the fire dept. and the dept. management got us these chairs. They're amazing. We sit in these things 24/7/365, and they're STILL comfortable to work in for 10-12 hours at a time (as we do). But as I and most of the people on here, am not rich, so I understand the $800~ price tag is discouraging. If you do get one, be aware that there are 3 different size chairs, for me the middle size is perfect, but you've got to try 'em before you buy as someone else said, they're not for everyone. Anyways, this concludes my first post.

I don't know where you're located, but you might want to see if there's a local Relax-the-Back store near you, and visit it.

I have a couple of their chairs, and I'm very happy. They are on the expensive side, but the stores always seem to have special offers on 'last season's' chairs etc.

I have one with a built-in mouse rest/pad which is great with a wireless mouse.
