Safari suddenly stopped working - any ideas to fix?

I'm an avid user of my iPad mini. All was working perfectly. Then this morning tried to do a search using Safari and each time I tried to type in the search box I kept being booted back to the home screen. I have tried switching off and on, a hard reboot, emptied my search history and cache but to no avail. I have also searched for updates but none. There is nothing wrong with my internet connection - I can access all my Apps such as Facebook which require an internet connection. Any ideas why my Safari would suddenly stop working and how to fix? It's as though I've lost an element of my software.

Hello there Ewa,

It sounds like you have forced the iPad to restart, and cleared all the website data on your iPad but it still keeps pulling you back to the Home Screen when you start typing in the URL bar. I would next quit the Safari app:

Force an app to close in iOS

1. Press the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps.
2. Swipe left to find the app you want to close.
3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close it.

When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:

iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.

How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
