Spilled a bit of water over my laptop now my battery doesn't work

I've spilled a little bit of tea over my keyboard. However, after that happened it first worked normal and I kept on using it, but after about half an hour the battery would show an x and when I unplugged it, it turned off. So I put it on the heating and waited until next day - it really was not much liquid so I believed it must have dried during 24h!

My laptop now only works when it's plugged in, but besides that it got unbelievable slow and it takes ages until it's turned on and ready to use. What is more, besides its decreased speed, I have some struggles using Safari - sometimes it works and sometimes it does just weird things and I have to close and open it a few time before I can use. Before all this happened, my macbook was in perfect conditions and I have never had any problems like this before..

I hope anyone can help me!

Like all things electric, computers and water don’t mix and it only takes a single drop of water to short out an electronic device. Continuing to use your computer after it became wet was a major mistake. You should have turned to computer off immediately and taken it to an authorized repair center. At this point you are looking at a very significant repair cost. Maybe you have renters/home owners insurance that will cover it.

Katrina - I wasn’t responding to you but I admit I was short with the person I was responding to and I shouldn’t have been.

As has already been noted here and in other posts, water damage isn’t something that has a DYI solution. Sometimes a user is lucky enough that almost nothing gets down into the electronics and gets the computer turned off before there’s a short. In such cases it is sometimes possible to dry the computer out using desiccants (rice is often mentioned but can be problematic) leaving no damage. As a tech I’ve even managed to dry out a few very soaked computers and get them functioning again (at least for a while). If the liquid was a sugary drink or anything other than water that adds more problems. Having gotten wet, contacts can begin to corrode but not cause problems until weeks later. That’s why it is best to get the computer turned off and into the hands of an Apple tech as quickly as possible and the fix is almost always an assault to the wallet.

I work a few hours a month for an Apple reseller and before that for other electronics stores. For as long as I can remember, as I’ve rung up a new computer purchase I’ve urged my customers to contact their home/renters insurance company to make sure their device was covered for all accidents/damage at a reduced deductible. Or to purchase computer insurance. A few dollars a month in insurance pays heavy dividends when you’ve just dropped your notebook on the floor or given it a bath.
