Computer Running Really Slow After Update

Most applications are loading and running really slow. Constantly getting the spinning beachball also. Trying to get some help. Would it help to post the report into this thread? It does say performance is "Below Average" but I'm not sure how to interpret the rest of the report.

EtreCheck can be obtained from here:

<https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>

Watch Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and look for processes consuming too much CPU, Memory, disk or network I/O.

Look at Applications -> Utilities -> Console for frequently occurring log entries, such as a process starting, dying, starting, dying, ... This kind of failing process can consume a lot of system resources, but not show up in Activity Monitor or EtreCheck output.

This is a well configured system. It has an SSD and Rotational disk. Generally Apple ships these as a Fusion drive, which should keep frequently used files on the SSD as well as initial writes going to the SSD. There is 16GB of RAM. This system should run really well.

While I do not see any well known "Red" flag software being installed, I do see a lot of 3rd party additions that seems to want to do things with your storage, one of which is a kernel extension. I mention this because often times kernel extensions have issues when the OS X makes a major version change.

16 GB is a lot of RAM, but you have used all of the RAM and started paging to disk, in only 3 hours since you booted this system. That says something is using a lot of memory. kernel_task is on the upper edge of normal for a 16GB system. Some of that is going to the nomadesk kernel extension, but some cold be from the apps you are running. This is a case of looking at the Activity Monitor -> Memory usage for any apps that are being a bit greedy.

A kernel_task for a 16GB system would have a low in the 600-800MB range, however, 1.3GB is not too bad. My 2011 16GB Macbook Pro has 1.16GB and I'm doing just fine running El Capitan. So I would look to the other apps you are running for where all your memory is being used.

Google Drive can sometimes consume a lot of resources, so look closely at that

Dropbox tends to be fine, but when you are doing lots of disk activity it is checking for file changes. I see Dropbox usage going up when I'm doing backups but when I'm not doing anything to my disks(s) Dropbox is idle.

If I understand unison, it is a file sync utility. If I'm wrong about that, feel free to correct. But if it is a file sync utility it is both a disk access utility and a network consuming program.

Solfs is also doing something with storage. Not sure if it has a network component.

Nomadisk sounds like it uses the network, so disk I/O and network I/O.

FUSE is a disk access utility.

So you will want to look at the Activity Monitor, Memory, disk I/O and Network I/O. Plus look for CPU consumers.

Also think about rebuilding the Spotlight index

<Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support>

I had issues with my Late 2009 27" iMac El Capitan installation's Spotlight. After reindexing things got better when the reindex finished.

As an experiment, you might boot into Safe Mode

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

This will not load the 3rd party addtions. If things works better in Safe mode, that would be a strong indication that your 3rd party additions are the problem. NOTE: Safe mode uses conservative drivers so you screen may flicker and some other things may be less than optimum, but if Safe mode feels better than a normal boot you really need to look at all the 3rd party additions.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.
