I am missing something simple. I have an iPad Pro and the Smart Keyboard. What are the steps to turn off the on-screen keyboard when the Smart Keyboard is attached?

Long press the right bottome Keyboard key on your onscreen keyboard , and choose "split" . After that, your onscreen keyboard will never be annoying display again.
