Q: I use to have a lot more photos in iPhoto than the Photos app on my iphone

As the summary indicates I'm not happy with how many photos I can store in the Photos app on my iphone.  AND the photos were not thumbmails that had to be downloaded.  Why can't Photos use downrezed jpgs for my iphone instead of this stupid business of streaming images on demand.  What do you think happens when you have poor wifi or cellular connection and you want to see a picture?  You get crap!  I had over 8000 jpgs on my 16 gig iphone under iPhoto and now under Photos I have half that and they're thumbnails.  I can't tell you how many times I wanted to show someone a picture and it looks like crap because of my connection to the internet.

 

I was under the impression that the iPhoto program was being retired and replaced by Photos.  Is this true?  There are things I like under Photos but this streaming thing is driving me nuts.  I really don't need a full resolution jpg on my iphone.  A jpg that was downrezed for the iphone would be fine with perhaps an option to get a higher rez version if desired.

    You can still use iPhoto 9.6.1 on your Mac.  It is compatible with El Capitan on your Mac.

     

    iPhoto on iOS does no longer work on iOS8 or iOS 9 on your iPhone.  So you have to use Photos on the iPhone, but you can still sync the photos to your iPhone using iTunes.  And the iTunes versions will be slightly reduced in size. 

    You just have to refrain from enabling iCloud Photo Library on the iPhone.  Sync selected albums to your iPhone by syncing it with iTunes (Sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in iTunes - Apple Support).

    Thanks for the reply.  I do like several features in Photos and would hate to have to go back.  I wish apple would have married the best features from both products.  Having to chose between full resolution jpgs and thumbnails with streaming downloads on demand is not a great choice.  I don't really understand why anyone would need full resolution jpgs on their iPhone.  Obviously I'd much prefer downrezed jpgs to save room and eliminate the need for a connection to the internet.  Perhaps I'm in the minority but for whatever reason I seem to always be somewhere with a poor connection when I want to look at a picture.

    I suspect, Apple did not expect us to sync libraries with 50000 photos and more to our iPads and iPhones.

     

    My first iCloud library was a small test library with 100 photos. When I synced this library to the iPad, everything was fine, The thumbnails were large enough to be able to browse the photos on my iPad, no problem at all. The thumbnail size was sufficient to be able to show the photos to friends and family.

    After I synced my main iCloud Library with 50000 photos, the Photos.app on the iPad is nearly useless. The thumbnail quality is so poor, that it is impossible to work with this library. Each and every photo has to be downloaded from iCloud to get a closer look, and it is not possible to make a slideshow without an Internet connection.
