Transferring everything from an HP Windows to an Apple OSX

I'm moving from Windows to iOS. Have an HP Pavilion running Windows Vista Home Premium. Would like to move

everything from the HP to a Mac Pro 5,1 TOWER w/OSX 10.9 Mavericks. Is there some kind of software program to

do that, and what do I need to connect the two towers? I consider myself of average computer skills. Is this something

I should even attempt to do, or do I just take the two towers to a qualified "technician" (Best Buy?) and let them bleed

me to death?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

If you have the ability to get both computers onto the Internet at the same time, you have the infrastructure needed for File Sharing. All that needs to be changed is some settings, or if you would like to use Migration Assistant, a small download to the HP system.

Yes, was looking to do that if I ended up with the Apple keyboard MLA22LL/A, which req 10.11 El Capitan, but went instead with

the Logitech K811 keyboard, which only req 10.6.8 or later. I figure I'll upgrade to El Capitan once I have everything transferred

over, and up and running. Why? Will El Capitan help me somehow with the data transfer from Windows?

Thanks for that; it's somewhat of a start. Problem is, it basically refers to transferring Mac to Mac, and only refers to a PC running Mountain Lion.

My PC runs Windows Vista, not OS. Everything on it is Windows based, except iTunes. This reply page, however, pulled up a link titled

"How to transfer data from a PC to a Mac: How to transfer data from a PC to a Mac - Apple Support

So....I'm getting there. Thanks for the help.

An update. That article, How to transfer data from a PC to a Mac" also mentioned (as you did) Migration Assistant as one method of transfer, so thanks for that. It also mentioned another transfer method: Direct Ethernet connection using an Ethernet cable to connect both computers (as I'll have both together) and

that I may need an Ethernet crossover cable. Not sure if that's different than a normal Ethernet cable and, until I check it out, I'm assuming that the

Ethernet cable is the same yellow cable I use to connect my router to my computer. Any additional help/input is always appreciated.

If both computers are connected to your Router such that they can get on the Internet at the same time, you don't need any additional cables -- they can already talk to each other.

If you decide to add another cable, The mac has been able to use either type of cable (straight to crossover) since about 1999.

The various versions of Mac OS X have only minor differences -- don't be put off by that, they all operate about the same.

OK, waiting for the Mac Pro, a Logitech K811 bluetooth keyboard for the Mac, and some cables to arrive. Plan to use a DVI-D cable to connect the Mac Pro to my existing HP monitor, and a regular Ethernet cable to connect the PC directly to the Mac Pro. If I've researched properly, Migration Assistant should be an existing program on the Mac Pro as part of the Mac OSx10,9 Mavericks operating system.

The Apple support document HT201553 refers to both MIGRATION ASSISTANT and to WINDOWS MIGRATION ASSISTANT. I'm assuming that they are one and the same and that watching the Migration Assistant on the Mac Pro will show me everything I need to see from both computers during the transfer. OR WILL I NEED TWO MONITORS?--one for the PC and one for the MAC?

The Apple document HT204087 (Windows Migration Assistant) says "On your PC, download the Windows Migration Assistant and install it." Is that something I can transfer over from the Mac to the PC? Or do I need to go to Apple's website and download it onto my PC?

I can't thank you enough for your help. I was resigned to an arduous, frustrating process, & you have helped me to actually look forward to it,

and hopefully be successful with it. Have downloaded Migration Asst to the PC. Waiting for the Mac to arrive. Hopefully won't need two monitors.

Are the os's so different that I should first upgrade from 10.9 to El Capitan 10.11 before attempting the transfer? Thanks, again.

Still waiting for the Mac Pro Tower. However, looking at the user manual for the new keyboard (Logitech K811 Bluetooth), it says that I still need the "old" keyboard for use installing the "new" keyboard on the Mac Pro. My "old" keyboard is from my "old" HP/Windows tower, with the purple six pin plug (no USB

connections). Looking at the back input/output plate on the Mac, there is no female receptacle for this type of plug, and I don't know if there's any kind of adaptor, or if an HP keyboard will even work with a Mac. Any suggestions?

Thanks for that. For $5, I'll get the PS2 to USB adapter anyway. Figure it won't hurt to have the old HP keyboard as a backup. Now...I have a Logitech wireless mouse, with the w-ifi dongle plugged into the HP. Since the Mac has Bluetooth, do I still use the dongle? Plus I use a Netgear 2.4/5ghz wireless router. Should I think about limiting or disabling certain things (dongle or router) to avoid any kind of wi-fi conflicts?

And the last question...Can I do this all (data transfer) with just one monitor. Since I downloaded the Migration Assistant to the HP, I'm sure I'll need my current monitor for that tower. What about the Mac Pro tower?

You said "Now...I have a Logitech wireless mouse, with the w-ifi dongle plugged into the HP. Since the Mac has Bluetooth, do I still use the dongle? "

A mouse that uses a wifi USB dongle still requires using the dongle since wifi is not Bluetooth.

The only real problem with interference is between wifi and bluetooth devices and USB 3 devices.

You said "I'm sure I'll need my current monitor for that tower. What about the Mac Pro tower?"

I do not understand you question. To use migration assistant yo need a monitor on both computer but y can move the monitor connection from one to another computer.

If what you want to transfer are files documents photos - the only thing you can as programs can't be - just use a pen drive. Why over complicate the procedure with cables and migration assistants.
