Cable image download problems from Canon camera

I have a brand new Mac Book Pro laptop computer with El Capitan operative system, and I am trying to download my images from my compact camera Gx1 to the laptop through the camera download cable. Of course I previously installed the Canon image software Canon Utilities /Camera Window from its CD (was enclosed with the the camera when it was purchased). (The Canon software EOS Utility, which i also have installed, is only intended for my Canon EOS camera models). However, the image download does not work no more.

The images are downloaded into the Mac folder (program?) ”Bilder” (*) (Images (?) in the english Mac OS version??) where I definitely not want them, I want to download my images into my own folder structure which differentiates between e.g. camera model/date photo taken/RAW file or jpeg etc. The Mac folder (program?) ”Bilder” (Images (?) in the english Mac OS version??) may be permitted to store the simple iPhone 6s images I take, but definitely not Raw files from my real cameras!

(*) ”Bilder” (Images (?) a somewhat circular-shaped rainbow-colored icon in the Mac OS - the Mac folder (program?)

The very strange thing was, that the first two weeks of use of my brand new Mac Book Pro laptop computer, the download of images to the Mac via cable from my Canon G1x camera did work as expected, but AFTER I once (the first time ever from computer purchase date that I tried to download images to the Mac from my iPhone 6s, also new) I downloaded images to the Mac from my iPhone 6s through the iPhone cable, the G1x camera image downloading system failed. I seems as if my downloading of images from iPhone 6s ”initiated” start-up of the Mac OS folder (program)

the folder ”Bilder” (Images (?) in the english Mac OS version??) and the Mac laptop then assumes that I wish to download all images, also e.g. my RAW files from the G1x camera to the folder ”Bilder” (Images (?) in the english Mac OS version??)….DEFINITELY NOT!!

I am awfully frustrated now and do not feel the I get any understanding or help from Apple support.

This problem description will also be sent to Canon Camera Inc., to inform them of my problems with Mac OS El Capitan.

Someone well experienced with Mac, a friend of mine, said that ”as usual, Apple ”hides” the images and makes them normally inaccessible in Finder. If you intend to work wth them in another program (also), you have to export the images from ”Bilder” * (Images(?) - not at all practical, meaning double image copies.

Enclosed 9 screenshots - .png and .jpg files (the png. files show how the Mac views are displayed, the .jpg files show ”how it should be viewed during proper cable download", the interface screenshots are however taken from a PC laptop with XP Home operating system, not the Mac OS.

The first two working weeks with my Mac, the ”desired cable download interfaces" WERE THE SAME as for the PC referred to above.

Hi CanalogSE,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I'm sorry to hear that you are having these issues with your new Mac. The application "Bilder" you are referring to would appear to be the new Photos application, the follow-on replacement to the previous iPhotos. If you'd like, you can find out more about it here:

From your description, it sounds like when you connected your iPhone to import your photos, it may have inadvertently changed the overall photo import settings by launching Photos for the first time (since the default photo import for iOS devices in El Capitan is Photos). If you would like to change the default photo import application for when you connect your Canon Gx1 (for example, to the Canon software), you should be able to do so from within another of the included application called Image Capture; I'm unclear what the translated name would be, but it should have this icon:

Image Capture Help

Within Image Capture with your camera connected, you should see an option in the bottom left hand corner to Connecting this [device] opens: which should allow you to select your preferred application; if you don't see this, you may need to click on the User uploaded file icon to show these options.

Hi Alex_h1 !

I do appreciate that you have taken your time to look into my problem -

The solution you suggest brings me somewhat in the right direction, to make download by cable from my G1x at least possible with some extra work, but it does not reset the settings to what the were the first fourthnight I had my MacBook. Please look at the screenshot I have enclosed here at the bottom, and you will note that I have "Within Image Capture with my camera connected, seen an option in the bottom left hand corner to Connecting this [device] open: which allowed me to select your preferred application CameraWindow (the Canon utility program) ; I needed to click on the User uploaded file icon to show these options.

The folders then (in the pop-up list) available for download does not include the folder(-s) I previously have created for storing my G1x RAW-file originals (which the Canon program does, and it also selects the correct year and creates an automatically dated subfolder yyyy_mm_dd in which the images are saved with the date the photo was taken.

The procedure you suggest within Image Capture (which also in principal applies to a m.o. where I insert the camera memory card directly into my computer - a designated folder, a subfolder yyyy_mm_dd etc., has to be created first) is indeed possible but far more tedious than the Canon Camera Window procedure. The Canon utility software also automatically opens the desired image viewer software after image download - to enable a quick glance at the photos and also rating them.

Connecting my camera with the cable to the Mac and then pushing the camera download-start-button only results in the two screenshots I enclosed in my first problem description.

I look forward to hearing from you again - hoping that there is a final solution to my problem or do I have to get me another camera??

Best regards

Hi CanalogSE,

We apologize if the previous instructions may have been a bit unclear. In this case, you would only be using Image Capture to change the default behavior when connecting your camera or card back to using your preferred Canon software. Once you change that setting and close Image Capture, your selected Canon software should open the next time you connect your device. You should not/would not need to select any folders within Image Capture; any specific folder or saving options you had previously should still be available within your Canon software.

Hi brenden dv,

I accept your apology - the major issue (being unable to download images from my Canon G1x camera by cable and using the Canon software) has now been fully solved.

Great thanks to R Mohlin at Canon services and Support, Sweden, who rapidly provided me with easy to follow step-by step instructions plus the necessary link to an updated Canon CameraWindow software, which enabled me to finally reach the desired goal.

"Börja med att avinstallera Camera Window. Du gör det genom att flytta programmet till papperskorgen.

Notera: Den senare versionen av Camera Window är utformad till OS X 10.9 och 10.10. Generellt fungerar den bra även till 10.11

Instruktioner:

1 Hämta filen "cdx-inst-8-10-5a-28-u03-9l.dmg.gz" från hämtningssidan.

2 Dubbelklicka på filen "cdx-inst-8-10-5a-28-u03-9l.dmg.gz". Den hämtade filen extraheras och filen "cdx-inst-8-10-5a-28-u03-9l.dmg" skapas.

3. Dubbelklicka på filen "cdx-inst-8-10-5a-28-u03-9l.dmg". Diskavbildningen "CW8105aM_Installer" monteras.

4. Dubbelklicka på installationsprogrammet "CW8105aM_Installer " i " CW8105aM_Installer".

5. Utför installationen enligt instruktionerna på skärmen."

Finally, I am now very relieved that I, mainly due to my own stubbornness and help from Canon Services and Support managed to restore the image cable download to get it to work as I previously had experienced.
