Q: Transfer datas from 10.6 to 10.10

Hello,

I will probably buy a new MacBook Pro in the coming weeks but before spending that much money, I wanted to be clear on something.

I am currently using my 2009 MacBook Pro, running 10.6 and I wanted to know how I could transfer all its contents on the newer one (10.10).

Is it possible with Time Machine? Or do I have to do it manually? Another solution?

Thanks for your help.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

This link should cover the use of Time Machine:

    Ciao.

Thanks for the link. But is it still relevant when going from 10.6 to 10.10? Also, it says "And to transfer directly, you may have to install/upgrade software on the old Mac." But I clearly can't upgrade my 10.6 programs to match 10.10...

That is not an option for you.  Look at the other ones.  Here are a couple of links that describe Migration Assistant:

    Ciao.

Moving from 10.6 on your 2009 Mac isn’t going to be a big problem as long as you have been keeping a TimeMachine backup. During the startup session of your new computer you’ll be asked if you’d like to migrate your information to the new computer. The answer is “Yes” and if you haven’t already done so, plug in the TimeMachine drive. You can directly connect your old Mac to the new one but you’d need a FireWire to Thunderbolt adaptor and the $30 cost just isn’t worth it unless you have a FireWire external device you’d like to keep using on the new computer. Frankly, since everyone needs to be making frequent backups, I push the back up using TimeMachine and then restore from TimeMachine transfer method.

The one relevant question is whether you should use Setup Assistant to migrate your data and applications or just your data. If you’ve not been keeping your software up to date over the last 6 years you probably have some programs that need to be upgraded. Since you can’t pick which applications to migrate, if you do have a lot of old programs it is probably best to just migrate your data and install the applications manually.

Ok thank you for the clarification.

Using time machine to import the datas, can I change the user name of the session? Or will it be the same one as saved on TM?
