Q: My Ipod shuffle doesn't work anymore

When it's plug there is a green light but my computer doesn't recognise it. Then when I turn it on I also have a green light but no music. When I press play there is also the green light but no music. Other buttons don't work.

Which iPod shuffle model do you have?  This document shows the four "generations."

Do you use a Mac or Windows PC?  If Windows, what version?

Are you using the USB docking cable that came with your 2nd gen iPod shuffle?  It is long and has a "mini-dock" (cradle) at the iPod end.   The short USB docking cable that comes with the current 4th gen shuffle does not work with the 2nd gen shuffle (connector is different).

If the power switch on your shuffle has been in the ON position (since this problem occurred), put it in the OFF position for at least ten seconds, then connect it to the Mac.  A Reset for any shuffle is to turn it OFF for at least 10 seconds.

If that does not help (or you already had the iPod's power switch in OFF position), try using this utility that is only for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle.  Use your Mac (the Windows version does not work with Windows 7).

It may not work, if the problem is a hardware issue (like a fault in the headphones jack) that is preventing the shuffle from making a data connection with your Mac.  It does make a power connection (based on the solid green light when connected).  However, if the cause is not a hardware issue, that utility may recognize the shuffle, when iTunes does not.  You can then use the utility to do the equivalent of a Restore in iTunes.

So it must be a Hardware issue. Can I do something to repair it?

Since this problem with connecting to your Mac occurred at the same time as not being able to play songs, the most likely cause is a fault in the shuffle's headphones jack.  Not connecting by itself may be caused by a faulty USB docking cable, or a problem with USB port on computer, but the shuffle would still be able to play songs that are already on the shuffle.

The headphones jack is part of the logic board assembly, which is basically everything inside the shuffle (except for battery).  The cost to repair (by a technician) would likely exceed the $49 retail price for a brand new 4th gen shuffle.  If you are technically inclined to do it yourself, this web site has repair guides
