Will the Macbook Pro support the Razer Core?

The discussion about gaming on Apple's Mac OS has been going on for a while. In addition to that dedicated graphics chips are getting more and more rare on Macbooks. Only the 15" Macbook Pro model is the only Apple notebook with a separate GPU.

A couple of days ago I have seen that Razer has announced a gaming solution for its own ultrabook, the "Razer Stealth". They are going to offer a "box" called "Razer Core" that contains a desktop graphics card and which is connected to the Razer Stealth via USB Type-C - a connection that the new Macbook 12 offers, too!

So could it be possible that the Macbook 12 or any future Macbooks will support external graphics cards through USB-C?

The Razer Core is a Thunderbolt 3 device, and is therefore incompatible with the current Macbook revision. Intel only recently added Thunderbolt over USB-C support in their chipset lineup.

Search "Thunderbolt" on this page and you'll unfortunately find that only the MacBook Pro supports a thunderbolt connection: http://www.apple.com/mac/compare/results/?product1=macbook&product2=macbook-pro- retina-15

All Thunderbolt 3 connectors are USB-C, but not all USB-C connectors are Thunderbolt 3. This probably sounds confusing, but the key is the familiar lightning bolt on the connector or next to the port. If this is missing, your system is most likely USB-C (i.e. USB 3 speeds and features) only.

I'd expect to see Thunderbolt 3-enabled USB-C ports on the 2016 MacBook lineup, and as @OGELTHORPE mentioned, Razer's driver and OS X's ability to auto-switch between internal and external GPU sources will be the deciding factors.

As a MacBook pro user of 8 years, I too am ecstatic about the prospect of an external, desktop-class GPU for my Mac. Fingers crossed 🙂

There is one prebuilt by some one online called bizon box look on you tube its very expensive though compared to the akito box.

its the same thing but twice as much but you do not have to build it yourself .but the cost of a bizon box you could build a small win 10 PC an GPU akito box is best wY to go I have been looking past year about building one but have never done anything like this be4 so it would be a hit an miss project but I have been wanting one for ages so might end up taking the plunge to buy one as it should work on all thunderbolt PC,S an Macs

but I live in UK an all akito boxes are sold in USA an will cost me 50quid just for customs then double that for shipping so the cheap box ends up costly in UK as 50 quid is like 80 USD plus the 200 quid for the box ends up 300/ 400 USD then a power pack then a GPU ,we pay same price in GBP for our macbooks as in state side same in USD look up 3000gbp compared to 3000 USD the is like 1500£ difference , you will still need to use an old dell power pack for the akito as its power pack is only 75w useless throw it away then which ever GPU you choose will work I've got a parts list itz just the shipping of these the bizon box is like 500Gbp too without a GPU 940gbp with a gtx 970 GPU plus shipping plus customs taxes , I can build a windows i5 k quad core with a 970 for that ,as I have been weighing it up too want to game on a macbook but I have D GPU in my Mac so will also need external monitor as it only works with retina screen on an Intel GPU only macbook . apple could easily make one of these an with an update could have it work with all mac,S but then people would wait longer to upgrade so they would lose out ,but to me they will make up for it with Mac GPUs an Mac Egpu system but they ignore what people want an tell us what we need a poor GPU at top end prices as they could of put 750 ti as well as 770 ti in there Macs but chose to go the cheaper route on that also an charge a premium for it ,on normal windows laptop you can pull out pcie WiFi card an connect a GPU that way it's the cheapest solution out there for laptops but it's a tough looking block but seems to work well on what I've seen for old windows laptops

Apple could definitely make one, could even call it Gaming GPU for Mac, I'd buy for sure. From seeing all the prices and difficulties, I've come to the conclusion that its MUCH easier to just build a cheap gaming PC, since I already have an external monitor. But cheap monitors are like $150 or so anyway. If I get it built at a store they will even give me a free copy of Windows I think.

Don't buy Akito or whatever. An actual PC box will be upgradable, and without any weird complication that GPU boxes involve. If your Mac ever dies you will still have a full computer to use. Considering all sides a $700 gaming PC is best way to go.

My $3000 (Canadian ) 2015 15" Mackbook Pro has AMD gpu. Such a joke, can't even handle some simple things like Minecraft shaders.
