Q: Internet Issue after upgrading to OSX 10.11.3

I installed update 10.11.3 to OSX El Capitan on my MacBook Pro on Monday evening.

Ever since the update I have not been able to connect to the internet whether via WIFI or Ethernet. I have tried multiple IPs and configurations but nothing works. I can connect to local LAN connections, and can ping website's IP addresses. However, I can't access the web with any browser (firefox, opera, safari, chrome). I thought at first it was my company's firewall blocking it. However I have tried it at public WIFI spots and it does the same thing.

The other weird thing is that I can access the web just fine on my Windows virtual machine whether using WIFI or Ethernet. I run Windows 10 via Parallels.

Any ideas as to what could fix this problem would be much appreciated!!

    Hello dlmhagerstown,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you are having trouble connecting to the internet through multiple browsers. I would suggest taking a look at the following article:

Solutions for connecting to the Internet, setting up a small network, and troubleshooting

I would also suggest focusing on the section on DNS Issues, at least to start.

    Best regards.

    Thanks for your reply!

I actually had just got my problem solved. It was a port issue.

    Hi,

Can you please indicate what you did to solve this issue.

I currently have a situation at home were both my Macbook Air (WiFi) en Mac Pro (cabled) have a working link with my DSL-modem (Ziggo, CISCO). For some reason this link drops after some time. No IP-adress anymore in my network for both machines. iPhones and iPad still have connections, so it seems to be an OSX issue (10.11.3). Only a reboot of the DSL-modem resolves the issue.

    Is this similar to yours?

    Best regards,
    Edward

The issue I was having is that I couldn't access actual web pages but I could still ping websites. This was happening whether on my network or on a public network. Is that true for you also? or does it work fine on public WIFI? If it works on public WIFI it probably isn't the same issue.

It turned out that somehow a port had gotten blocked on my Mac and I needed to do a reset. That fixed it for me.

From what you are explaining I think it may be an issue with the DHCP on your router. (the service that assigns IP address to your devices when you connect)

It seems like after a period of time your computers are losing their IP connection to the router.

One possible solution would be to set them up as a static IP. However if you did that you would need to turn it to automatic IP mode if you tried connecting to a different network or WIFI hotspot.
