lag on ssd

hey i purchased a 2nd hand 2012 macbook but in excellent condition a few months ago and put an new samsung evo 850 500gb ssd and 16gb ram into it the day i got it.

i installed mac os 10.8 and migrated my user account over using the migration assistant then i upogarded to el cap.

since i got it i noticed there is lag/beachballing sometimes. eg when i go to apple>about this mac>storage. the beach ball doesnt last long maybe 3-5 seconds but it happens with other apps too. im wondering is this cuz i dont have trim enable?

from googling i found contrasting things about enabling trim on samsung ssd'd on mac's so i didn't boder doing it as i didnt wanna risk it.

do u think its a bad ssd or just because i dont have trim enabled?

is it actually safe to turn on trim for my ssd?

do u think its a bad ssd or just because i dont have trim enabled?

is it actually safe to turn on trim for my ssd?

TRIM support for you SSD in OS X would have nothing to do with your lag concern.

It's OK to enable TRIM on your SSD. I know of one person who has said Samsung support recommends it on their SSDs, but it's not mandatory.

With your Etrecheck output, we would need to see the rest of the report which shows apps running/loaded. So, if you could provide this, there may be something we see that could be causing your lag and not the SSD.

Jan 31, 2016 6:24 AM in response to alankellyeire

Seems that a lot of the EtreCheck report is missing.

I also have a Samsung 850 EVO 500 MB drive installed and am running El Capitan 10.11.3.

Not having any problems. I was initially also concerned about TRIM but found that the problem was not to do with the Samsung SSD or Apple, but was to do with Linix.

So, I enabled Trim and it has been working fine for a couple months.

Trim:

To enable TRIM, first save all your open documents as this will reboot your Mac.

1) launch Terminal.

2) Type "sudo trimforce enable".

3) Confirm that you want to enable trim.

4) Reboot your Mac.

To verify that TRIM is enabled, click the Apple icon in the top left of your screen. Choose "About this Mac" -> "System Report" -> "SATA/SATA Express" and look for the entry "Trim Support". It should say "yes" if trim has been enabled.

I would make a backup before installing Trim, as you seem to be having issues and a backup is always good.

Then I would attach the remainder of the EtreCheck report as maybe it will show an issue someone can help you with.

SSD (disk1) / : 498.88 GB (97.42 GB free)

with only this small amount free, and given that you have done a system re-install or upgrade, it is entirely possible that your SSD is nearly clogged with deleted data. This is best cleared out by enabling TRIM -AND- passing through Safe mode to run Disk First Aid on the Boot drive.

Jan 31, 2016 6:00 AM in response to Csound1

it was purchased in dec 2012. it only had 25 charge cycles when i got it so either it was rarely used or plugged in to main all the time i dont know.

here is the full etre report sorry i didnt include it with the op but i was getting some error when trying to post so i thought it was cuz my post was 2 long. but i was cuz i forgot to choose a category. 😮

i have enabled trim since i started the thread.

Hello alan,

You have some funky kernel extensions. I suggest uninstalling these:

/System/Library/Extensions

[loaded] com.actionsmicro.ezsound (1.0 - SDK 10.9) [Support]

[loaded] com.howard.framebuffer (44 - SDK 10.10) [Support]

[loaded] com.yourcompany.driver.usbscsistor (43 - SDK 10.10) [Support]

They may eventually prove to be innocent and can be reinstalled, but they look suspicious right now. Make sure to use only a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never try to remove these files by hand. Never use an "app zapper".

Of course, given an extension with the name "com.yourcompany.driver", you might have to do something manual. But at least look for instructions first.

Jan 31, 2016 1:01 PM in response to etresoft

i only know what one of these kernel extensions is and thats [loaded] com.actionsmicro.ezsound (1.0 - SDK 10.9) [Support]. i think this is the miracast program(EZcast) i installed a few weeks ago. the problem was occurring long before this was installed. so i doubt thats the problem but i will uninstall regardless.

how do i actually uninstall these kernel extensions?

Hello again Alan,

That's an excellent question. I gave you general instructions, but for specifics, you will have to do some research on your machine. Collect a list of all 3rd party software that you have installed. In order to install something in that directory, it would have had to have been something that required your password to install. It will probably be something that has some hardware component or interface. I'm sorry, but I can't say more than that. Sometimes these software packages include other software and it can be very difficult to find out who actually owns, and originally installed, a particular kernel extension. Even if you do track it down, they might not provide uninstallation instructions.

I don't want you to just delete or move the file. There is some other software or hardware on your machine that depends on those files. There is no way to tell what will happen if you partially remove it.

Although that one extension may pre-date your problem, it could still be involved. These things aren't that straightforward I'm afraid.

You said that this problem started when you installed El Capitan. One or more of those extensions could be incompatible. A guaranteed fix would be to erase your hard drive, reinstall El Capitan, and then manually reinstall the latest version of all 3rd party software. When you migrate from backup, migrate only user documents and nothing else. If and when the problem returns, you should be able to identify the culprit and remove it. Unfortunately, that process is harder than it sounds. Tracking down the mystery kernel extensions doesn't sound so bad anymore, eh?

Feb 1, 2016 2:09 PM in response to etresoft

yeah i was thinking of wiping everything to get rid of all the crap but i was afraid it was the SSD that was the problem and not then OS.

is there anyway i can make sure its definitely not the SSD as i don't want to spend time clearing an external to copy my OS and start off from scratch with a new OS that i will have to reinstall everything with.

thanks again for ur help

Alan:

EtreCheck also shows that you have Disk Warrior 4.4.

I found this on the Disk Warrior website. http://alsoft.com/diskwarrior/support.html

09/30/2015 - DiskWarrior 5 Compatible with OS X 10.11 El Capitan

The previously released DiskWarrior 5 is required to run an installed copy of DiskWarrior while started from 10.11 El Capitan. If you have an earlier version of DiskWarrior, please consider upgrading to DiskWarrior 5 for complete 10.11 El Capitan compatibility.

Sounds like Disk Warrior 4.4 is not compatible with El Capitan.
