Carplay not working on my iPhone6 ios 9.2.1 and the VW GTE Passat Discover Pro 2016

i tried everything possible to get my iPhone6 working with Carplay on the Discover Pro.

Changed Simcard

Bluetooth on and off, unpaired etc.

reset iphone6 via iTunes and configured as new iPhone

Tried different original apple lightning cables, one even provided by Apple support Netherlands

Tried resetting factory defaults of appconnect on the Discover Pro

When i connect an other iPhone6s it works immediately.

tried the same settings of the 6s that does work, still the iPhone6 is not working with Carplay.

Here a video of the procedure showing it does not work. After all these option i tried

Apple support escalated the issue to apple support engineers, a week ago, i called 2 times to get an answer, but they are still looking into it they say.

I Tried every option lots of Carplay enthousiasts told me to try, but my iPhone6 ios 9.2.1 does not work with Carplay on the Discover Pro.

and yes the discover pro is running the latest firmware, and works as a charm with a 6s using the original apple cable. But my 6 not..

waiting on Apple support...

Been testing some more, it just is unstable as ****, even through a complete boot it keeps crashing lots and lots of times. Complete car is going back to VW until it is fixed, they simply do nothing if you wait.

I will post the pictures of the Firmware Version i tested on where it was 100% stable and the version on my Discover Pro unit, where carplay constantly crashes. For the world to see and developers at VW Germany and Apple to learn. VW called me and they want the car back for a Firmware check tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Indeed, was at the garage today, another VW dealer closerby. They took the matter more serious and are diving in now. Making a so called DISS call to VW Germany.

I have tested it for another week now, carplay is very buggy stil. Upon connecting Carplay is almost never starting immediately. Always some fiddling to get it to work. Very few times it picks right up.

In case the connection is lost, i need to manually take the following step (YES ALL OF THEM!!) to get it to work again.

- Pull usb cable out of the iphone,

- got to general and then Carplay, and delete the Profile VOLKSWAGEN

- restart the iphone

- Then in Discover Pro2 settings, Factory Reset the App Connect in SETTINGS

- Go to Media and if the USB1 still sees the Iphone safely remove it via SETUP in MEDIA

- Then Hold the Power Button of the VW Discover PRo2 for 15 seconds and let it reboot, you hear a little click, then start it up again

- Then the 2 units are fresh to connect, not knowing eachother

- Be Sure iPhone Bluetoot is off

- Then connect cable, whilst being in Settings Appconnect

- You get a popup on the display of the VW Discover Pro2, asking to Connect

- If your lucky the iPhone wil show a pop-up to Accept connection, Accept it!

- Then the profile nests itself in the Carplay menu on the iPhone

- Then it pops to Carplay most of the times, and it works.

If during this proces, the iphone shows the light blue bar on top and buzzes once and after that once more, than you are ****** and have to do the whole process over again, because your iPhone will never be recognised via the USB1 port.

What i find very strange is that sometimes you have to select the USB device in Appconnect to connect, and normally it should read exactly your Name of you Iphone, So in my case, Iphone 6 van Xavier. But sometimes, it just reads iPhone, of even iPod!! A name of a connected device that has never even connected to the VW Discover Pro2 unit.

It is very clear that the firmware of both iPhone and VW Discover Pro2 are not working as they should, Each time you have to pray for a proper handshake, Killing the usage of Carplay, reason why most people who come accross this just let it be and do not use it at all.

VW and APPLE get your S%^&* together!

ANother week down the road, and Carplay keeps crashing now and then. Another bug i found is that the spotify app does show after installing it on the iphone but upon starting the spotify app on the carplay display in the car it only shows the title 'Spotify' and nothing more... Cannot do anything but to return to home.. so again Carplay is Extremely buggy, why is Apple or VW not doing anything to fix these issues???? People pay good money for nothing...

Again Apple and VW get your **** together!!

and then there was the iOs 9.3 update, and nothing, absolutely nothing has changed, nothing is done by Apple to fix the issues stated so many times, super support engineers who know that this issue exists, clearly have other priorities. Or just do not give a f%%^!

The carplay connection is still disconnecting abruptly at given times (mostly when a popup appears on you iPhone, like a new message or a new podcast..)

Apple and Volkswagen both do not give a rats *** about us customers trying to use their application and hardware devices.

Apple GET your **** together!!

Like many others I've had problems with CarPlay and iOS 9.2.1 and 9.3 (beta as well as final release) in my 2016 Passat. I finally figured out what it was and it's been completely fine ever since:

The attempting to connect/disconnecting cycle would only start if I plugged my phone in immediately after turning on the car's ignition and it was still negotiating connection with the phone via BlueTooth. If I start the ignition, wait until the signal strength and battery indicator on the touch screen of the radio show up and then plug in USB, CarPlay works fine. Hope this helps.

ETA: I've got an iPhone 6S Plus running iOS 9.3.

Come again DerDrache? So you connect first via BT not connected to USB Lightning cable, then wait until you see the battery and signal strength, and after that you plugin the Usb1 into the Lightning port of your iphone? And then it works?

Not in my case, upon receiving a message via sms or whatsapp or pushmail the connection crashes and i have to reconnect and if it does not pickup the connection again i have to reset appconnect as well as reset my iphone and then reconnect.. And if i am lucky it connects again... i cannot understand that VW does not fix this horrible issue!!! They really do nothing!!!

Exactly, get in the car, turn on ignition. Watch the screen until the cell phone signal and battery icons show up on the display to indicate that BlueTooth has successfully paired. Only after that do I plug in the USB. Probably 30 seconds all said. Since then I've had significantly fewer issues connecting to CarPlay. Any lingering issues seem to be alternating between the CarPlay interface and SiriusXM. The SiriusXM won't output audio until I do the 15 second power-off to cold start the head unit.

I haven't run into any issues where push notifications seem to trigger a crash. I'm curious to when VW will update too because supposedly they were the one vendor ready to demonstrate wireless CarPlay at the car show last year before Apple made them pull the plug on it. That certainly indicates there's a new software version for the head unit available or in the works.

Thx for the quick reply, i will surely try this and i will let you know if that is the thing. If it is the case then it boils down to the bootup of the head unit having to complete, sometimes appconnect takes ages to prepare itself to go functional.

we must not forget that for a car audio unit and application it must work flawless so drivers are not fiddling with their iphone getting it to work whilst driving. VW and Apple must be aware that a buggy application is affecting the driving experience and safety whilst cruising. It really boggles me that they do not fix this asap for this!! At the end us drivers are responsible but these faulty gadgets work frustrating and cost precious time to get it to work. as a marketeer i cannot understand this... Customer centricity is 0,0 at VW... So sad they do not take these cases serious... It sure as **** is not working properly yet. VW let me test a Golf Variant running older firmware on the Discover Pro and that worked flawless from the getgo.. I tweeted the pictures to prove it. I stresstested it for 2 hours, and not even a tiny glitch!! So it does work flawlessly on another unit running older firmware, which makes me state it is 100 % VW firmware related. So VW get your **** together!! Asap! Shame they do not read or social listen to us Car owners Or have webcare monitor this... the unhappy customer content is piling up bigtime!!

Been on the road testing some more, but connection got lost whilst leaving the usb connected shutting down the car, exiting and reentering and starting up again, had to reset both units blabla as we know, but waiting for a proper boot up sure looks a bit more stable, not so many crashes as upon connecting is immediately. Thanks for that!

got a mail from apple support that in any case we have to wait for updates of VW and Apple, it is up to the gods...

I have also this problem on a Jetta TDI 2016 (MK6, in México).

One of the first things I did, some months ago, was to unpair the Bluethoot completely. My iPhone doesn't connect via Bluethoot to the car anymore. But I still have this problem happen to me at least once a week.

I have had this happen since getting the car, on November 2015. I have tried with different cables, and with all the iOS versions that have been released since. I'm running now on iOS 10b6. In all cases the behavior is more or less the same. With no apparent reason from the outside, there are times where AppConnect won't connect to the iPhone, and maybe once every 3 times, the head unit will freeze and reboot itself at some point on the "reading USB device, connecting to iPhone, unable to connect" cycle.
