Q: iCloud Music Library??

I purchase all of my music from iTunes. no CD rips or imports...all iTunes based.

So when i have iCloud Music library disabled in iTunes and select 'Show iCloud Music Purchases' I can see all of my iTunes music purchases (iTunes in the cloud) and choose to download them or not.

When i enable iCloud Music Library all of them disappear and have no items.

How does this work?

would it not show my iTunes purchases by default?

or do i have to download all the music first – then iCloud Music Library will take it from there?

does not help. as to why i have some stuff in iCloud music library but not all my purchases

so my main question is how or why is only some of my stuff in iCloud Music Library and the rest are not (they're all iTunes purchases)

So I again ask, do i have to have the items downloaded first before they go into iCloud Music Library or can iTunes just pull it from my purchase history?

is iCloud Music library based off uploaded/downloaded music or stuff i've also purchased - wouldn't that automatically be in there??

iCloud Music Library is used in conjunction with iTunes Match, or Apple Music, or both.  Your iTunes purchases that you do not have downloaded are stored in iTunes in the Cloud which is not the same thing as iCloud Music Library.

Here is an article that may clarify things:

Both Apple Music and iTunes Match are subscription services.

iCloud would have no way to access your purchase history. It is looking at what is on your computer, regardless of its source.

OKay so iCloud Music Library will not pull / link to purchased content (that is NOT downloaded)?

iTunes in The Cloud is what does which is not equal or similar to iCloud Music Library. ...

That is correct. You can see your Purchased items that are not downloaded (i.e., are in iTunes in the Cloud) as follows:

On your iOS Device: Go to the iTunes App, click on More>Purchased>Music>Not on this Phone (iPad, iPod)

On your Mac: Open iTunes, click on the Music icon and then on iTunes Store at the top of the Music window, then under Quick Links, click on Purchased>Not in My Library

You can also set up the option to always show your purchases that are not currently downloaded as follows:

On your iOS Device: Open the Music App, and in the center of the screen select the Songs/Artists/Albums option (in red). You will see a toggle at the bottom of the screen that displays that says "Only Downloaded Music". Turn that off if you want to see both your downloaded and iTunes in the Cloud music.

On your Mac: Open iTunes and click on My Music, then click on the View option in the top menu bar. If you see the option to "Show iCloud Music Purchases", then you can click on that to show your iTunes in the Cloud music. If it says "Hide iCloud Music Purchases" then you are already seeing both your downloaded and iCloud purchased music in the My Music list.

okay, so i was just experimenting around to figure out if i want to continue to fully vest into Apple ecosystem.

i just a bought a new album on my iPhone, did not download to the device, nor is iCloud music library enabled.

but it popped up on my Mac with iCloud music library enabled - even though it only has my partial purchases, anything new shows up. now how do i get the old items from iTunes to show up without having to download everything again?

Read the instructions in my post about how to permanently display purchases that are not downloaded. Again, your purchases have nothing to do with iCloud Music Library settings.

What do you see when you click on the View option when you are in the My Music view in iTunes on your Mac?

If you are seeing "Hide iCloud Music Purchases", then the reason you see the new album is because you are showing music that is not yet downloaded, but is purchased. If with this view option selected, you are not seeing all of the purchases you are expecting to see, then is it possible that the music you are not seeing was purchased under a different Apple ID? What do you see when you follow the first set of instructions in my previous post about seeing your purchased items?

If you purchase music on your device, it downloads to the device automatically at the time you purchase it.

What part of the link says anything about permanently showing iTunes purchases? not seeing it

I only have 1 apple id, never made additional.

my devices have downloads turned off as most of them do not have adequate space currently

Correct. As was stated in the beginning of this thread, if you do not subscribe to iTunes Match or to Apple Music, then iCloud Library does not apply here. iCloud Library is only used in conjunction with one or both of those subscription services.
