cannot add a jabber account to messages

Hi,

So to Add A Jabber account you are in Messages > Preferences > Accounts

You are using the Add + icon and then choosing Other ?

In the next Pane you should be choosing Jabber

The Jabber ID should include the @jabberServerName.com as well as your Username part.

You should not add a GoogleTalk/Hangouts name here.

The Server name is then stripped out to fill in the Server Settings tab on the account.

Is the server name you are seeing here the one you expect ?

If you have added Google it will list either gmail.com or googlemail.com but the Google Server is talk.google.com

If this is the case delete the account and re-add as Google one.

(the server in the pic has closed down which is why I used it)

If you see the Account in these Preferences then check it is Enabled (Account info pane)

If you were expecting to see the Buddy List window go to the Window Menu and choose to display it.

I am having the same problem. This is a "new to me" computer that was wiped with Yosemite when I got it. Yosemite wouldn't let me add my Jabber account in the same way you're experiencing. Upgrading to El Capitan didn't fix the problem either.

I'll keep messing around with it, and if I find a solution I'll let you know.

OK, here's what I did to fix it:

1. Reboot in Safe Mode (hold shift on boot).

2. While in Safe Mode, add the account in Messages.

3. ???

4. Profit.

It's possible you don't actually have to do #2 while in Safe Mode, and I'm not sure if it will let me add an additional Jabber account now not being in Safe Mode, but the account I added in Safe Mode is working perfectly now.

I was presuming you were adding it in Messages and not via Internet Accounts in System Preferences.

I would try it the other way round.

Delete the item in System Preferences > Internet Accounts and then set it up in Messages.

I have done it this way for two of My Apple IDs (@me.com and @icloud.com) to use them as valid AIM Screen Names.

System Preferences needs the Apple ID to be an iCloud ID and then in the iCloud pane there is no option to link the ID to Messages (as the iMessages ID or the AIM Screen name variant).

You're not really understanding the issue. The issue is that you add the account in Messages and it gets added to Internet Accounts, but isn't in Messages. Then the "Configure in Messages" button in Internet Accounts doesn't do anything when clicked.

My solution below solved the problem for me, however.

I have re-read from the top and in light of the "Solve" I can see that I had not taken the info far enough.

With your pictures I had then presumed that you had started in Internet Accounts and not Messages itself.
