I went to the Apple store and restored my second generation iPad to its original state. I'd like to update the iOS to 8 or even 9 if possible. How might I do that and any advice on which would be better? Didn't see it in the app store. Thanks. Barb

Is it possible that you have the original iPad? The orginal iPad can only be updated to iOS 5.1.1. It does not have a camera. Identify your iPad model - Apple Support

You cannot with original iPad (1).
It is an iPad 2 based on what the apple store told me and the photos you referred me to.
You will need to update to the current version, which is iOS 9.2.1. I normally update using iTunes, but you can update over wi-fi as well. Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Normally, when you restore the device to factory settings the iOS also updates, but since it didn't try the above steps. If there are no updates available, then it is probably the original iPad.

Normally when you restore to original state, latest iOS if available will be installed.
To confirm, key in the serial number found in Settings > General > About > Serial Number.

It is the iPad 2.
Since that was done at the apple store do you think it would automatically update to the latest iOS? ...or just factory setting which was 5.1.1?
I would have thought it would have updated, but don't know for sure. Since it is an iPad 2, you should be able to update using iTunes or going to settings>general>software update. -AJ

If your iPad doesn't have any rear facing camera lens or a front facing camera lens (dot) opposite the home button, you have an original iPad 1 and the orginal iPad cannot be upgraded past iOS 5.1.1.
The hardware in the iPad 1 is NOT capable of supporting newer IOS versions.

The original iPad is nearing the 6 year mark (April 2016), it has not received any updates since 2012.
You may want to consider upgrading to a new or "newer" ( used ) iPad model.
To insure some future proofing, I would recommend looking for 1st Gen. iPad Air models or greater.
iPad 2 and 3 models are having some issues with the most current iOS versions now available.
And many current iOS features are not supported on iPad 2, 3 and 4 models, either.

A Google search shows that as a first generation iPad. It will not update past iOS 5.1.1. You are probably not seeing the camera as the others have asked you either.
That appears to be a 32gb first gen ipad. Unfortunately, that means the iOS can't be updated past 5.1.1. -AJ
