Q: Numbers files have vanished
since updating my ipad air to ios9.2.1 and numbers to 2.6.1 all my old numbers files have vanished! where have they gone.

Maybe you had them in iCloud? If so, make sure that 'iCloud Drive' is turned on and that Numbers is "turned on" in Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive and that 'Use iCloud' is turned on in Settings > Numbers.
