Sound from both Audio line out and internal speaker

Sound was working fine on my Mac Pro (line out) until yesterday. Now sound will come from either the line-out or the internal speaker depending on the application generating the sound.

For example, I can play a mp3 file with Real Player and I hear it over the internal speaker. I play the same mp3 file with Quicktime and I hear it over the line-out speakers.

I first noticed the problem when converting a wav file to mp3 using an application called Switch. When I played the converted file, the sound played in the internal speaker.

I have shitdown the Mac and unplugged the power cord and then rebooted with no change in behavior. It would appear to be a system setting, but the Sound Preferences still report that line-out is selected.

Any thoughts?

Let me tag on here and ask... I just setup my new Mac Pro 3ghz machine and I notice that I get ALL audio output through the line out when its booted... the startup chime does NOT play through the line out... it used to play through the internal speaker , but thats muted in control panel to get audio to play out the line out in the back. Is this normal? Shouldn't I hear the startup chime through the line out ? This works like its supposed to on my G5.

thanks

I think It's normal... I can notice the same bahaviour with my Mac Pro too.... Everything get through the line out (external speakers) except for the startup sound that comes from the internal speaker.... Well, I don't care. Indeed I'm sure the internal speaker is still working fine. 🙂

From my experience with the Mac Pro (limited as it is), the startup sound is emitted from the internal speaker.

Back to the original question:
The Audio Midi Utility was set to line out as well. I played with toggling between the internal setting and the line out with no luck. It still appears as though a system setting, not available through the normal user interface has been incorrectly set.

I'll throw my hat into the "volume keys will only adjust the internal speaker" ring too. It's been doing this for 3 days now, but only on one user account. I've tried rebooting and even deleting all audio related preference files but still no luck. This happened once before a few weeks ago but went away on it's own next time I logged in.

I'm a little glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem.

I have been having a similar problem and I finally found a fix. I have tried everything and the only thing that worked was an erase and system install. I spoke with apple and then sent them product feedback, and lo and behold, they fixed it. There is an article on their site:

I did what is said and it fixed the problem instantly.
