Adapter recall -asking to send iPad back

WWith the recall annonced today i have filled out the form to get a replacement charger. It says that you need to send the iPad to support. Surely you would only need the old adapter pin? Why do I need to send in the iPad?

Apple needs to check the serial number of your iPad in order to figure out if you're eligible for a replacement (e.g., if your iPad was sold in a qualifying country).

You might consider taking the iPad to an Apple Store (or authorized service center)—instead of filling online forms and sending the device—so that the agent can quickly make the check.

They are incorrect. The announcement was only yesterday so the news has probably not filtered down yet. You should have asked for a supervisor. If you are so concerned then overcome your hatred of the phone connection and call Apple and refer to the program. If they don't know about it ask to speak to a supervisor. If that doesn't work ask to speak to a manager.

It is possible that in the case of your device their is concern that the flawed charger may have damaged the iPad and they want to check to be sure. If it has they can then replace it.

I got exactly the same response when trying to make an online request for a plug replacement. This was after fronting up to my local Apple store to be greeted at the door with: "Plug replacement? I'm sorry, we've run out - too many customers came in for replacements." This was only three days into the replacement program! (I'm in Australia, too, by the way.)
