Time machine 5Tb Seagate Backup fail or succeed?

Time Machine did an initial encrypted backup of my Mac Book Pro (10.10.5) to a 5Tb Seagate Backup to completion. It did the first backup after that, then said "Encrypting" but the bar never moves past the first 1/16th or 1/8th. There's no error message.
